Grooming older dogs ?

Mollie has got to a stage where her hips hurt her a bit (she is under the vet and isn't in terrible pain). Because she is sensitive around her back end due to her hips it's getting difficult to brush her. I don't want to force her and make matter worse, she would never bite or even warn she just wriggles away and won't let us do her.

Any suggestions ? Is there a kinder brush or way to do her without freaking her out ?

Hi Julie if brushing older dogs I like to sit/kneel on a rug (or the lawn in the summer )and let them lay on one side while I gently brush .
This takes the weight off the joints and can be combined with a tummy rub which helps to make the experience enjoyable

That's an idea, we have been trying to do it with her standing as usual so will give that a try. Thank you.

My lad has really bad hips with a lot of muscle atrophy so does not have a lot of flesh over his bones. He's a long coat as well so brushing him is a problem. I now brush what I can and cut any mats out of his trousers A wide tooth comb is fairly good as well. The main thing is to go gently around his back end.

Just wanted to revisit this thread to update for anyone else having problems. Tried the way minihaha suggested and I know only have to get a brush out and Mollie is laying on her side ready for her brushing - she loves it ! So thank you mini and to anyone else give it a try it works !
