Mine do I quie often give them commands without any help from body signals,I can quite happily stand with my hands behind my back and do stand, sit, down, throw in the odd close and come asking them to do a run of 10 or 12 commands they do listen because I give them no body signals and use the same voice

Basset the bernese can TOTALLY pick words out a conversation. Even if we are discussing whether to go on a walk or not (between ourselves) he will start barking.

Kestral on the other hand is totally dim to this. 1 year on and she still doesn't understand walkies even when I say it in a stupid dog voice....

....and what about my w-a-l-k command when my dog is alongside me? She breaks into a trot and gets slightly ahead, so I say w-a-l-k, she immediately drops back to my side and stays IN a walk! How can she know that when she's not even looking at me?

Deff words, actions - and context
Im lazy - I use 'weave' to do the weaves in agility - and the same to weave between my legs - both dogs know the difference and never try and weave between my legs when running and agility course

My first dog could bring any one of about 12 different toys she owned should I ask her.

I am sure mine understand words! Bed, dinner, sausages, treats, pheasant, wait, stay, down, leave etc. Dogs know their names which are words even if they sometimes choose to ignore it!

Fiji once did a heelwork to music routine without me saying a word, I noticed she was doing things before I had actually asked, she was picking up on body movement.

I would like to think they do understand the words but I think it is more they are able to associate certain words with what happens next, mine will run up the stairs to a cue of 1... 2.... 3... if you say any words this does not happen but they associate this with lots of praise and belly rubs ! My daughter tried this with them with giving a paw and asked for a rabbit instead of a paw , given she had a treat in her hand they both sat in front of her and gave her a paw, so definately association for me
