why do dogs roll in anything that smells bad

Why do they love rolling in things that stink?

Thats a question my o/h and i have always wondered,
if hooch finds any dead animals, birds seem to be a his fav, he will roll around trying to get as much as he can around his neck and head. he will also do it with fox poo.
Is it a hunting kind of throw back thing, just always wondered.

Apparently its to mask their own scent so they can sneak up on their prey without detection.

I tell Harvey every day there's just no need for him to do it when there's a bag of food at home. Things that smell disgusting to us dogs seem to like, I know Harvey loves it and if he doesn't roll in it he eats it

fox poo doesn't it just stink to high heaven, hooch looks really pleased with himself after he's found some to roll in. it can take days for the smell to go even after bathing him.

Fox poo is bad enough - but have you experienced the putrifying dead seagull camouflage yet ?
