Neutering

Does anyone know approximates for neutering a dog please and the differences at various vets? I've not the slightest idea yet.

This varies enormously from area to area and vet to vet so your best bet will be to phone round. Make sure you give them the weight of the dog because the anaesthetic goes on weight.

I am not sure what you have in the UK but a big thing starting up here are "mobile vets"... they work a lot with shelter and mass spay and neuter. Because there is no "check up" and no overnight stay the cost for a neuter is about 1/3 the vet fee.

I paid £130 for a spay for a bitch under 10kg. Over 10kg-xkg was £170 I think, then more for another weight bracket.
Neutering nearly always costs less as it is an easier, less invasive procedure.
I live near London though so everything is horribly pricey here!

My friend had her dog done for £70 at a walk in clinic, as opposed to £130 at her regular vet's. It's worth shopping around. The fee included a couple of checkups - not sure I'd use a vet that doesn't offer any aftercare.

How long is a piece of string ?

It depends on the vet, the type of neutering(for bitches can be keyhole or open)& follow up included in the price.

I would only got to a vet I had 100% confidence in

My Jessie cost £170

If it is for your puppy, he's a bit young yet to be thinking about castration IMHO the bigger the dog, the later they mature

Its more expensive if one testical has not dropped as they have to go looking for it,I had this with mine.think it was around £220, more or less. Had my boy done at twelve months, and 31 kilos. He lost weight after surgery and had to go back for more surgery three weeks later due to infection. Have only now just got the weight back on him at 23 months, will do my younger one later than this, as have read recently again about it affecting them in maturing by removing the source of hormones before they have finished growing. I am going to leave him as long as possible, maybe 18 months or closer to two years. Julie
