Hi there,
Ubuntu is free to download and even better will ship CD's to you free of charge, tho you may wait several weeks to receive them.
Ubuntu uses the GNOME desktop, however there are other versions of ubuntu that use other desktops, Kubuntu uses KDE, Xubuntu uses xfce etc.
The idea behind ubuntu is to provide an OS with 1 good application for every (well most) need.
The latest release (Dapper Drake) has recently been released and has a guaranteed 3 years support on a desktop PC and 5 for the server version.
Ubuntu is based on Debian linux, but aims to offer up to date packages (applications). Debian is well known for being secure and robust but to achieve this doesn't always use the most up to date versions of packages.
An advantage of a distribution based on Debian is it's package management tool apt-get which resolves dependencies automatically.
There is loads of info on the web about Ubuntu, particularly good is
www.ubuntuforums.org
all (well most) the answers you need are located here.
Ubuntu does offer a 64 bit version, but of course a 32 bit version will also run on any AMD 64 bit processor
Hope all this stuff helps, any questions just ask.
