KCAI scheme..

My dogs trainer asked me after our lesson this evening if i ever thought about becoming a dog trainer myself ,
he said he would bring some info on the scheme he had done and would recomended for me to look over ..
I know we have a few trainers on here has anyone done the Kc scheme?
Any thoughts??
Even if it comes to nothing it was very nice of him to offer ..

Smokeybear mentioned this a few days ago.

I've looked at it after a friend suggested I have a go, but my experience in their terms is not much, so I'll wait on that a while. But for those who can access more class work than I, it looks better than good

I am a member of the KCAI scheme, and if I get my finger out, hopefully will get assessed next year.

It is very similar to the NVQ scheme.

It works by converting everything you know into points. Ths included your level of underpinning knowledge and experience level.

You are assessed by evaluating a portfolio of evidence and a practical and oral.

It is divided into sections

Applied Knowledge of Theory

This is divided into 10 modules

Welfare and Dogs in Society
Care and Needs of the Dog
Living with Dogs
Dog behaviour
Training the Dog
Training the Handler
Problem Behaviours
Laws and Responsibililities
Professional Service
A project of Choice

Background Experience

Rules, regulations and responsibilities
Dog Skills
Assessing Skills
People Skills
Contribution you have made to the dog world

Coaching Skills

Qualities required
Planning Sessions
Evaluation
Exercises
Teaching Methods
Progress
Problems
Managing Resources
Service Provision
Practical Project of Choice

Overall instructing experience

Responsibilities
Range of Teaching Skills
Types and Temperaments of Dogs
Contact Hours
Precision
Personal Development

Why do I think it is THE route to go down?

It is the most comprehensive programme available and it is validated by an EXTERNAL body ie the C & G. It also allows for ALL approaches and is not prescriptive in its membership.

As long as you keep you annual membership up you can take as long as you like through it.

It is very daunting at first when you see the paperwork, and I put mine in a drawer for months, mainly due to work pressures etc

ETA I forgot to say you can do specialisms in Agility, Obedience, HWTM, Working Trials, Rescue and Rehoming, Assistance Dogs. Gundog work in fact anything you like.

There is a mentoring scheme to help.

A dog club I attended suggested I become a trainer once, so I started their course...
and when it came to the practical I stopped because I had difficulty keeping my mouth shut when faced by wilful ignorance and downright idiocy. The dogs are no problem. The owners, now.....
