Bites back nails & lucks back feet

My French mastiff mix frequently bites his back nails and licks his back feet. There is some minor redness to the pads, but really minor. Is this an allergy problem, or something else? Trying to decide whether to take him to my holistic vet.

Could be grass seed in between his paws but better to check it out!

Could be a yeast infection. Does the skin recede back from the nail/s?

Not in an obvious way that I can see.

My late Lurcher used to bite her nails - just one at a time, and she never made them sore. When I saw her doing it I used to trim them all, and she would stop. She didn't lick her back feet though.

Just had a thought when he wees does the urine splash his feet? Try washing his feet for awhile in mild salty water after he's had a wee that might help.

I'll pay attention to the urine flow. Tbanks. He bites the nails even after nail clips. Length doesn't seem to matter. I read once it might be a sign of pain, though he's on galliprant and gabapentin for a bulging disc. This pain does seem well controlled. There is no grass seed on the lawn. I'll probably make a vet appointment.

It may not be pain, he could have a lack of feeling in his feet if he has disc damage.
Having chemo has left me with dead areas on the soles of my feet, and I'm always shuffling and tapping them, and wriggling my toes. I can't say it helps much, but I think it has become a habit. Warm soaks and massaging his feet might be worth trying.

My staff does this..nothing up with her paws or claws but she isn't making them red or sore, if i see her doing it, i tell her to leave her paws as i don't want it becoming an obsession
