Dexter ~ Beautiful Boy Inside & Out – 2yo Black Greyhound

DEXTER

**UPDATED: OCTOBER 2013**

Location: Kennels in Norfolk, UK. Dexter would love a foster home while he waits for his forever family. We are very stuck for foster homes right now so any help at all is hugely appreciated.
Key Points: Very loving, cuddly, affectionate, bit shy with new things, walks well, good with dogs, not yet in a home.

The delightful Dexter is a 2 year old greyhound boy who is looking for a loving home after being chucked out of the racing world for not being fast enough. He is a very handsome black boy with a white heart on his chest. Dexter is very slender and elegant at 28” to the shoulder. He will be just magnificent once his coat gets a healthy gloss and he puts on a bit more condition.

~ Personality ~
Generally: Adorable, loving, playful, shy initially but soon gets over it, very affectionate and cuddly.
Dexter is a real sweetheart and is loved by everyone. He is a bit shy at first, but give him just a few minutes to assess things and he quickly becomes the friendly cuddly boy we know. He loooooves people and adores every bit of interaction he gets. We can't wait to see him in a home where he has his human time 24/7 and doesn’t have to be left in a kennel again. Dexter is beautifully engaging and interactive, loves hugs and ear rubs, and very much wants to be a good boy. Dexter is also a great big foodie so training should be a fun time for everyone involved.

~ In the Home ~
Generally: Not yet in a home.
Dexter has sadly not yet been in a home environment, so new owners will need to be a bit understanding at the start and give him time to learn the house rules. It generally takes greyhounds 10-14 days to start to settle in a home, and really all they need is time and patience. He is going to be so grateful for the home comforts once he gets to experience them.

~ Other Animals ~
Generally: Great with dogs, social and playful.
Dexter has been great with all the dogs he has met so far and hasn’t put a paw wrong. He is social, bubbly and very happy-go-lucky, making him a favourite with other pooches. Dexter enjoys canine company and would do well in a home with another dog or two already present to show him the ropes. Dexter has not yet been officially checked with small dogs yet, but he has met a few and behaved very well. This can be properly checked before he goes to his forever home.

~ Out and About ~
Generally: Walks well after initial happy bounce, dog savvy, friendly and social, bit shy of new things.
Like most greyhounds, Dexter won't need as much exercise as you might expect. He will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch his legs offlead in a safe area once or twice a week. Dexter adores his walk time as it means he gets to leave the kennel and also gets to interact with his people. He gets a bit excited initially but quickly calms down, and we expect he will calm down even more once he has human access all day long rather than at set times.

Dexter walks well on the lead though can be a bit shy in new environments or around very noisy traffic. This is just a confidence issue that will improve once he bonds to his new family and has some stability in his life. Slow and steady with gentle guidance is the way to help this boy.

~ Greyhounds as Pets ~
In general greyhounds are very calm, mannerly dogs that are used to being handled. They can fit into a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly.

~ Where Am I? ~
Dexter is currently in kennels in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him.

~ Want To Adopt Me? ~
Dexter is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This dear boy would benefit so very much from a chance to live in a foster home and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always eager for new foster volunteers. It is an extremely rewarding experience and costs are covered by us.

If you are interested in adopting or fostering Dexter, you can contact me (Tam) via email: tam@kerrygreyhounds.co.uk, or speak directly to Bronwen by phoning: 075 000 62648. Emails are usually replied to within 24 hrs.

There are application forms for both adopting and fostering Dexter, and we will ask you to fill the relevant one in as the first step in the adoption/fostering process. To speed up this process, we recommend you do this before emailing/calling. You can find the forms, as well as further information on our homing & fostering procedures, on either the Adoption Page or Fostering Page .

Thank you.

~~ KERRY GREYHOUNDS UK ~~

Kerry Greyhounds UK is a voluntary organisation based in Norfolk, England. It focuses on rehoming unwanted Irish greyhounds and lurchers, as huge numbers are bred in Ireland each year and homes are few and far between. KGUK operates through a network of volunteers spread over Ireland and the UK. We can look after approximately 30 dogs at any one time in both kennels and foster homes.

Each dog is neutered, vaccinated, & microchipped before being adopted (unless stated otherwise).

We assess the suitability of all home offers, and we have homed greyhounds in all corners of the UK. If interested in one of our hounds, please feel free to contact us.

The delightful Dexter is a 2 year old greyhound boy who is looking for a loving home after being chucked out of the racing world for not being fast enough. He is a very handsome black boy with a white heart on his chest. Dexter is very slender and elegant at 27” to the shoulder. He really is an elegant, handsome boy and this is becoming more and more apparent as he loses his kennel coat.

~ Personality ~

Dexter is also a great big foodie so training is a fun time for everyone involved.

~ In the Home ~
Generally: Housetrained, home savvy, learning house rules, good with foster dogs, not destructive, ok to be left, likes socks!
Dexter has just moved into a foster home, and so is in the settling period. He is so far going really well, and is now learning the basic house rules as all new dogs do. He has been housetrained from the very start, ok to be left with canine company, not destructive, and just needs to learn not to counter surf to be 100% perfect in the home. He doesn’t like laminate flooring, but it is not a massive issue and he will get used to them in due course.

Dexter is very mannerly with people and is trying hard to learn the do’s and dont’s. He gets really excited when new visitors come to the house, but this burst is short lived and after initial hello greetings, he takes himself away and settles down to snooze. He is really friendly and happy to say hi to anyone. Dexter is also now starting to play and its great to see him pick up a toy and experiment with it. He likes to toss them in the air, and also takes notions to drag his bed around like a comfort blanket! He’s also taken a strange liking to socks!

Dexter is sharing his foster home with 2 other houndies and loves them to pieces. He is relying on them in these early days to show him what to do in the new home environment, and he is learning very quickly. Dexter has shown that he likes to have a quiet bed in a corner somewhere, out of the middle of the home bustle. He will give a small grumble if another dog tries to share his space, though we suspect this is due to the initial ‘I can't believe how lucky I am’ phase that many greyhounds go through, and that he will get better at sharing as he settles and realises hes not going back to kennels.

~ Other Animals ~
Generally: Great with dogs, social and playful.
Dexter is super with other dogs of all sizes and loves making new canine buds. He is social, savvy and well balanced. He likes to play and gallump around, and would be a fabulous, undemanding companion for another dog. He is not cat friendly.

~ Out and About ~
Generally: Walks well & never pulls, dog savvy, friendly and social, bit shy of loud traffic, great to take anywhere.
Dexter is a low maintenance boy and doesn’t need as much exercise as you might expect. He is currently getting 1 walk a day during the week with field romping at the weekends and is content with this. He doesn’t pull on the lead and is a joy to take anywhere, being so social, balanced and mannerly. Dexter needs a bit of work on recall before he can be safely be let offlead, but this will come with a bit of training and repetition. He can never be let offlead in areas near public roads or livestock, but should be fine offlead in places like the beach with proper recall training beforehand. He travels beautifully in the car, and though is a little bit nervous of large vehicles when out walking, we think he will get better himself with repeated walks.

** UPDATED: FEBRUARY 2014 **

Location: Foster home is Suffolk.
Key Points: Gentle, loves cuddles, very sweet, loves people and dogs of all shapes and sizes, very easy, walks well on lead. Very good in the car. Not cat friendly.

The delightful Dexter is a 2 year old greyhound boy who is looking for a loving forever home after being thrown away from the racing world for not being fast enough. He is a beautiful black boy with a lovely white patch in the shape of a heart on his chest. Dexter is very slender and elegant and measures 28” to the shoulder. Although he is fairly tall he's very 'leggy' and so seems quite petite for a boy. He really is a 'head-turningly' handsome boy and this is becoming more and more apparent as his coat condition has improved. Put simply just a gorgeous boy!

~ Personality ~
Generally: Adorable, loving, playful, shy initially but soon gets over it, very affectionate and cuddly.
Dexter is a real sweetheart and is loved by everyone. He can be a little bit shy at first, but give him just a few minutes to assess things and he quickly becomes the friendly cuddly boy we know. He loooooves people and adores every bit of interaction he gets, especially in cuddle form. He is very engaging and interactive, loves hugs and ear rubs, and very much wants to please any way he can. Dexter is also a great big foodie so training is a fun time for everyone involved!

~ In the Home ~
Generally: Housetrained, home savvy, learning house rules very quickly, good with foster dogs, not destructive, OK to be left, likes socks!
Dexter has been very lucky to have been living in foster mum for about 4 months now. He is getting on really well, and is now learning the basic house rules as all new dogs do. He has been housetrained from the very start. He has been fine left for a few hours with canine company and has not been destructive at all. He responds very quickly to commands and no longer jumps up in the kitchen but the little piggy does like to follow you around JUST in case there is any chance of food! He doesn't seem to be overly keen laminate flooring, but it is not a massive issue and he will get used to them in due course.

Dexter is sharing his foster home with 3 other greyhounds and a Jack Russell terrier, and LOVES them to bits. He has relied on them in the early days to show him what to do in the new home environment and he is learning very quickly now. Dexter has shown that he likes to have a quiet bed in a corner somewhere, out of the middle of the home bustle. He will give a small grumble if another dog tries to share his bed space, though we suspect this is due to the initial ‘I can't believe how lucky I am’ phase that many greyhounds go through, and that he will get better at sharing as he settles and realises he's not going back to kennels.

He likes to toss them in the air, and also takes notions to drag his bed around like a comfort blanket! He’s also taken a strange liking to socks!

As we said before Dexter is sharing his foster home with 3 other greyhounds and a Jack Russell terrier, and LOVES them to bits, he is just super with other dogs of all sizes and loves making new canine buddies. He is social, savvy and well balanced. He likes to play and do zoomies and would be a fabulous, undemanding companion for another dog of any size, age or gender. He is not however cat friendly.

~ Out and About ~
Generally: Walks well and never pulls on his lead, dog savvy, friendly and social, bit shy of loud traffic and of new things.
Dexter is a low maintenance boy and doesn’t need as much exercise as you might expect. He is content with two 30 minute walks a day, although would be happy to go for longer as he really loves his walks. He doesn’t pull on the lead and is a joy to take out. Dexter needs a bit of work on recall before he can be safely be let off-lead, but this will come with training and only when a strong bond has formed with his new family. He should never be let off-lead in areas near public roads or livestock, but should be fine off-lead in places like the beach with proper recall training beforehand. He travels beautifully in the car, and though is a little bit nervous of large vehicles when out walking, is getting more confident every day.

~ Where Can I Live? ~
Dexter is a truly lovely boy, a little shy to start with and so we feel he would be most happy in a quieter home and would need someone around or at least one other dog for company and to play with. Don’t delay and call us today for more information as someone is going to be very lucky adopting this little lad! Please also note we do not re-home to families with children under 8 years of age.
