Apologies have not been following all of this so much as have should have. A dog/s and owner being safe, enjoying whatever they do together and of benefit to all should be how should be. Dogs and humans have(or should have) a very special bond from ages past, to manipulate them in order to fit into human ways if cause harm and distress should be considered very much more.

I have an HPR, but her prey drive is restricted to prey only, she is not interested in a ball but I taught her to play with it for food!

I have know several dogs who had no interest in toys and had to be trained to play with them ect. Do you think after a while the dog gets into it and plays with the toy naturally or is it always an artifical repsonse?

Interesting question, and I do not have a definitive answer, I believe that the dogs I have seen who have been taught this still look for food. Including mine.

If I call my HPR back and he's expecting to be rewarded with the ball/frisbee/toy coming out, he won't take a treat. He turns his head away if I offer one, as if he feels cheated.

I train my dogs to accept another reward in stead of the one they are expecting. My GSD would do the same, but he has to accept the lower hierarchy reward.
