The perplexing Capstar (Nitenpyram) for fleas

Capstar (Nitenpyram) is sold in tablets for both cats and dogs in just about every Wal-Mart in the world, as a flea "antidote" of sorts.
The idea of course being to administer the pill to kill all the fleas on your pet, in addition to other measures, to help break the stubborn flea cycle if you are unlucky enough to get them.
Web pages abound saying it is safe for pets, when used correctly, and can be given as much as 1 per day.

On the surface, it looks like a complete rip-off.
Averaging $30 for 6 pills, each pill only lasts 24 hours and only kills adult fleas on the pet.
It only takes a little bit of reading to figure out that fleas produce eggs, and larvae, as well as spending most of their time off your pet. So the ones on your pet will be killed, then others will just jump back on. To that end 6 pills looks like more like a moneymaking scheme for Capstar than a solution.
However, many sites are quick to point out places like Ebay that sell generic Nitenpyram at $30 for 100 pills, or even 200. And, they do.

Now we might be getting somewhere. In stubborn circumstances, in conjunction with heavy vacuuming, cleaning, flea baths and/or topical, it sure looks like these pills could make the difference in winning the war, especially if you have a bottle of them not just 6. Say, giving one pill intermittently over the course of weeks, to kill the entire flea population as it comes through.

But of course then the question is- how safe is "safe for pets when used correctly"?
The drug is supposed to be fully out of the dog's system within 48 hours. And weighing the health hazards of a flea infested home/yard and pet, the tradeoff seems worthwhile.
However, Wikipedia after confirming the safety of the product, adds the nice vague and completely unhelpful disclaimer:

There is no antidote to Nitenpyram poisoning.

Yet it says nothing about what this is.
What the heck??
What are people's thoughts on this. thanks!
