Mange

What can anyone tell me about Mange?
It's ok Mo hasn't got it but my neighbours, dog sitter's dog, has. She has asked me if she can still let her dog go and stay with the infected dog.
I have said no.

There are 2 types of mange - one is caused by a flare-up of mites that are naturally found on most dogs. The other is very contagious. So I guess it depends which sort it is.

Thanks Claire, I suppose a flare up of mites would still be contagious
I guess it would be sensible to stay away until it has cleared up, especially as she has an alternative sitter.

Sarcoptic mange is passed from dog to dog or even dog to human so infected dogs should be kept away from others until the condition is clear.

Demodectic mange cannot be passed directly from one dog to an other.

Thanks Susan, I have no idea what type it is. She is a very old Shetland Sheepdog.
I think my neighbour has decided to keep her Westie away until it has cleared up.

Demodetic mange isnt really contagious.
If its that one, you shouldnt have any worries.
Sarcoptic mange is contagious.
Dogs should be kept apart in that case, although having said that, there still has to be quite heavy direct contact between the dogs to pass it on.
For example, a non-infected dog can briefly come into contact with a sarcoptic mange dog and still not automatically get it, although it is not worth the risk.

my dog has freqently come into contact with dem. mange dogs with no worries, and once or twice briefly with sarcoptic mange dogs without getting it, as i used to treat, foster, or handle mange regularly as part of my job.
i just took precautions where necc.

skin scrapings will tell the difference. the treatment and prognosis is also very different. so proper diagnosis is essential. as posted above, demodex is NOT contageous
but sarcopts is

there are 2 types of mange. demodex and sarcoptes
sarcoptes is itchy and contageous. also easier to get rid of
demodex is due to immune suppression. all dogs have demodex mites. only a few get "mange"
a skin scraping is needed for diagnosis.
treatments are different for different types
