Commands?

I am wondering what commands are acceptable to use and what they teach your dog to do.

I am trying not to introduce too many too quickly bearing in mind that depsite her age she has very basic understanding/training. (9 month old rescue)
So far we have covered 'sit' 'stay' 'down' 'away' She seems to be getting the hang of them, though mostly when she wants to, rather than when we want her to!! We often forget and say another word, for example we have said wait instead of stay so we want to be united on the right words/commands to use.

Also, what tone do you use?

Dogs dont speak english so just so long as you rem what you are telling them to do with what word it can be anything
The one thing I would say is dont talk too much, if someone who spoke a totaly different launguage to you was trying to teach you to sit and they said 'come over herre and be a good girl and sit nicely over here' or they just said 'sit' and showed you how to sit, which one would you understand quickest?

trying to rem what Ben can do
I have done away with a stay, any command means 'do that and stay till I tell you something else'
sit, down, stand, back, out (away), in (towards), right, left, bow, circle me, leg weave, weave, tall (on back legs) heel, close (heel on the other leg), follow, tail (paws on my bum), touch, nose, paw, other (paw) high five, gimme 10, beg,
thats all I can rem at the moment - I actually started a spreadsheet so I could rem the commands but for some of them he is more still using the hand signal rather than the words

We took our five month old pup to his first socialisation/training class tonight, so these are still fresh in my mind
He knows his name; "watch me" (draws his focus); sit; down; stay; stand; leave it; take it; and recalls. We've been treating and praising after every command, but we're working on putting commands together and treating when he completes the combination (i.e. sit, down, stay, stand).

Then there's things like "no"; "get down", either when he jumps up or climbs on people; "in the car"; "out" and "in", which is either leaving or entering a room (or the house if we've been in the garden); "enough" for when play is getting a bit OTT and it's time to calm down; and "okay" which means they can eat their dinner when I've asked them to sit and stay while I put the dishes down.

Our year old bitch knows all these, and can put them in combination. She can also give her "paw", "sit up" on her hind legs, "go to bed" and "find the puppy!"

I agree with Sez, dogs don't understand the word (as we do) it's the sound. For instance if you use the word ''off'' (I have tested it) you could say toff, boff soff doff goff and they would still do it.

Thing to remember is everyone sing from the same song sheet. here ours know, down, sit, wait, post (skye gets the post) find, ball, speak, biscuits (Bruce goes to the biscuits) off (when I want them to get off something as down means lie down) dishes (Reah and Bruce get thier food bowls) bag (Bruce takes the branches, if I'm gardening to the bag) lead, door (when we're going out they sit at the door when the command is given) car, walk, away, here, paw, right, left (thats paw work) gently, slowly,(mainly used with Skye when she puts the furries and the chickens away at night) close (when I want them to heel) draw (thats for them to open the door where thier food is) bed, chair, box (for them to get a toy out of thier toy box) be clean, out, in, feet (thats when thier feet are muddy and I want them to stand on the towel by the door) and loads more.....but everyone must use the same word. I found it harder to teach my hubby to use the same words than it was to teach the dogs. Tone wise ...here it's soft and calm.

I think you have to use words that come naturally to you rather than conform to a list of words. It's repetition and reward that gets results. I must admit I'm a sod for using two word commands but that's how I speak so that's what the dogs have learnt. I tend to use get down, get off, find it, leave it, lie down, shut up etc. I do use single words too such as wait but it's your dog, your choice.

Humm....agree - dog's don;t understand english (or any other human language for that matter )

So...you can say what you like and as long as you are consistant it won't matter Use what comes naturally
