Nerves

A few days ago four dogs bombarded Bo on our walk..

Two of them proceeded to chase Bo, and I don't mean playing, she RAN. She was a speck in the distance - and I was SHOUTING at the dogs owners to get them away from her, as they were headed in the direction of the road.

STUPID woman, when I asked why her dogs weren't on leads if she couldn't control them (she was walking with a stick ) and her response?

"Well - why isn't your dog on a lead"

I just said (shouted) my dog is OBEDIANT! And has RECALL.

Her reply..

"well - it's the same principle isn't it"

ANYWAY.

Since then when a dog approached Bo, the WHOLE lot of her hackles come up along her back, she is scared.

Really pissed me off, because she can be shy of dogs as it is - takes her a bit to find her feet (then she is silly daft).

For instance, yesterday, big black lab (was a black lab cross and an alsation cross that chased her), came up, she cowered, and the fella came and collected his dog, went to give her a stroke, and she scooted away from him hand Like she was hand shy or something...

Grrrrrrrrrrr. Stupid eejit woman.

Really sorry to hear about Bo`s bad experience, it is so annoying when this happens. MY dog Daisy is very nervous of other dogs because this sort of thing has happened to her in the past. I have worked very hard to socialise her and she was coming on leaps and bounds and then something bad happens again. She has been even worse since I lost my other dog Barney over a year ago and without him she has lost her confidence and never seems to want to socialise now.

Hollie was very very nervous of other dogs after she was attacked, she is much better now though. When walking her after the attack I constantly praised her for walking nicely, when we saw another dog approach I would gently say 'good girl' all the time she continued to walk nicely, this has worked and now walks are a pleasure again, although we have come to realise she will never be too good with other dogs, she will often have a big growl at them - I think it is her way of saying one got her once and it isn't happening again.

I know what you mean.

Luckily Bo is young, and she does LOVE some dogs, but as a general rule, she likes to suss them out first.

Probably all my fault, getting a puppy in the depths of winter, I struggled to meet many dawgies in her first few months

She is a really happy dog though, so I don't worry TOO much, just would be nice if she wasn't intimidated by big dogs - generally it's the ones that BOUND up to her!! Which is a doggy fact of life - some are excited!

Poor Bo , however try not to let the episode affect either of you, it's best not to anticipate a reaction when meeting other dogs or to sympathise with Bo in any way..instead jolly her along in a bright confident voice and hopefully the episode will soon be forgotten

I have the same problem with my oldest welshie. He was chased by three dogs and he turned tail and went home crossing a main road..I was terrified as he was only 6 months old at the time.
When I asked the stupid woman what she was doing she said they only wanted to play, four large dogs off leads and one small pup, stupid idiot.
since then he's no confidence on a lead and I can only excersize him alone at night.

Sorry to hear about other similar events.. Seems the world is full of nutters.

I don't give her any attention when she is being shy.. she will come to me if I am near, but I just keep going ahead.

She does like some dogs, so hopefully she will meet one who will restore her faith soon

Poor Bo There are too many dog owners out there with little consideration for people who have dogs who are frightened of others etc and they make no effort to control their dogs. I hope this episode won't affect her in the future. I agree with Minihaha's post - jolly Bo along and show her there is nothing to be frightened of.
