I started using a harness for walking my dog, the pulling that he was doing at every walk has ceased, he seems to be much more responsive and easier to walk. it is far more enjoyable walking him now.

Hi,
My dog is also very excited on walks, he is now 1 year and 2 month.
My first thought when I read your post was.. 30 min walk a day-depending on the bread,.. maybe not enough?? cause my dog is an active breed (he is rather lazy though) and I did like 1-2 hours every day.Maybe your pup is more energetic than the others and needs a bit more exercise?! Then also when they are a bit more tired they learn more easy. This Video/Person I really like. Hopefully it helps you

Hello

you should try getting a dog harness like this one as it gives better control

my friend got one as the collar was choking the dog and works wonders.

It might help if you give your dogs some basic commands like "sit", etc. before you go for a walk.

It usually helps calm them down a bit, and serves as a good activity dog tracker. Not entirely sure if it would work with your dogs though :/

I read the thread and sometimes it makes me wonder how lucky we got with our rescue dog. We have had him since he was about a year old and he is now three and a bit.

When I go to put my walking boots on he just lays patiently on the hall floor and waits for the "let's go" instruction. He waits outside the front gate to be told left or right. I think it's out of habit rather than training. So we go right much of the time and walk for an hour or so. No lead/leash or harness. We just walk - well he canters or gallops along investigating everything.

At times he is out of sight but we are confident enough that he will catch up. But, of course we worry.

"Max, let's go" is all it takes.

Though it may help others, the OP has not been back to comment on this thread since 2014. I suspect that she may have cured the problem by now.
