Has our dog been neutered?

This is probably going to sound like a really stupid question to some of you...

We got our dog (a German Shepherd cross) in April. He was a rescue dog initially but we bought him off a couple when he was 12 weeks old as they couldn't cope with him.

We assumed he'd been neutered at the dogs home as I understood that they did that to all dogs?

The reason I ask is that he clearly has two balls! Or it looks like it anyway. There's definately two ball shaped things back there behind his winky!

So, my point is, if a dog has been neutered, should he still have balls? Do they just snip a pipe back there or do they remove the balls completely?

This is probably the weirdest question I have asked the internet. Ever!

I would think.........if hes got balls, hes not been neutered,
I would think the option of snipping a pipe back {lol} would be unlikely,
dont worrie about the question being weird, you should see some of the stuff I have posted on here lol
can you call the rescue centre, or just pop down to the vet and ask.

As Shona says, seems very unlikely that they would leave the balls if he had been neutered.

Most rescues neuter when the dogs are a wee bit older, so if you got him at 12 weeks and he'd already had one home before that, I would say that he hasn't been done. The original owners may well have been given a voucher to get him done when he was older - might be worth checking with them?

OK, thanks guys.

Assuming that he hasn't been neutered and we get it done, what are the benefits?

He's not really agressive, but certainly a bit hyper. He does bark at other dogs quite a lot and likes chasing them about. I think he's even tried to hump some other male dogs (he might be a gay!)

Most young uneutered dogs will hump anything, some continue when they are older. Neutering can reduce this over time.

The biggest reason to neuter your dog would be to avoid any accidents as 1. He is a crossbreed.... nothing wrong in that but there are plenty around already... and 2. Because he is a rescue.

There are health benefits too.

Dan - people have very different views on that....some on here will say there is no reason to neuter a male, others will disagree.

From my own experience I would almost certainly have a male neutered. I had one entire male who would follow a bitch's scent to the ends of the earth - talk about a one track mind. Really wish we'd had him done, but our vets at the time said that it would make him lethargic and lazy.

Then had a rescue boy who was done - he was great (and wasn't fat or lethergic).

Mind you, I've met plenty of entire males too (including Shona's), who are fine.

I believe the suggestion is that if they are done too young, it may affect their proper growth.

I would suggest going to have a chat with your vet.

Also, if you do a search through previous threads, I'm sure you'll come across numerous discussions about the pros and cons.

You have already had great advice about neutering from Hali and I would also agree that if your dog has two testicles, then he most definitely isn't neutered

Have to agree he doesn't sound neutered to me either. Bruce has been done and he hasn't got any poor boy.

Neutering in my opinion, is a persol choice. Mine are all neutered, but again personal choice...however with Bruce he was showing signs of getting ''snappy'' with other males. Now he has calmed down alot from that...well unless they growl at him first...then he starts being bossy.

I've met lots of dogs that are not neutered...Shona's lot....and they are brill.
For me it avoids accidents (mating) and plus my sister had a dog that lost it's life at 4 years due to prostrate cancer, which the specialist who was treating him, said could of been avoided if he had of been neutered.

As others have said sounds like he has not been neutered.

Nerutering is a very personal choice and in my opinion it does not stop huimping only procreation.

I have two entire males at present and they are fine and live together harmoniously. I have a secure back garden and they have never so far hankered after a bitch in season. One is five and the other almost four years old. I am vigilant with them and I personally would only have a dog neutered if it was for health reasons, but the choice is yours and if you think the occasion could arise when he could get at a bitch in season then choose to neuter as there are enough unwanted litters around , but on the other hand if you are a responsible owner, which I consider myself to be then the answer is dont . I have had entire males over the last 30 years and they have never been the cause of any unwanted puppies.

Good luck with your new puppy whatever you decide.
