I can tell you a true story. In the 60's I was a kennelmaid in a beautiful old manor house in Derbyshire belonging to a very rich lady who had many dogs kept in superb conditions. There were four kennelmaids housed in a wing at the side of the house. I shared a room with another girl L* . Our room had a corridor at the end with a curtain across and the other girls walked through our room to get to the stair, the house was reputed to be haunted. One Autumn night M* (who had the next room to us) and I were on duty together, the other girls had gone home for their days off and the manager and owner were away overnight at a championship show so it was just the two of us. We did the 9pm night duty.. feeding the puppies and whelped bitches and giving the dogs a last run and a biscuit. M* was in a very grumpy mood cos it was Saturday night and she had hoped to have the evening off to meet her boyfriend who used to come on his motorbike, but she could not cos everyone else was off. As there was no one about I said I would not tell anyone if M* sneaked off for an hour after we finished our duty, I would leave the side door unlocked for her but she was to come in quietly cos we were on duty again at 6am. M* went off about 10:15pm, I settled the house dogs and went up to bed with my dog. It was a very cold still night, I snuggled down under the covers but could not get warm or go to sleep. I looked at the clock and it was now 11:45pm , M* would be in soon. I heard M* come in, my dog growled and the dogs downstairs barked. M* crossed cross the corridor at the end of my room to get to her room and I said to her crossly "For heavens sake do you have to make so much noise and bang all the doors?" she did not answer and I heard the door on the other side of her room bang as she went to the bathroom, little cow I thought making so much noise when I was kind enough to let her go off. My dog continued to growl and I told her to be quiet and go to sleep it was only M* then I finally went to sleep myself. I woke with the alarm at 5:45 and went to make the cocoa which we all had before work, breakfast was not till 8:30. I sipped my cocoa and fussed the housedogs while waiting for M *to come downstairs ..then the side door banged and M* rushed in.."I'm so sorry please don't tell on me" she said.. "Ds* parents are away and he had the house to himself so we went back there..it seemed a better idea than waking you up ..god i'm freezing pass the cocoa"... I like to pretend I fell asleep that night and dreamt it all.......
