Holiday maker dies trying to rescue dog from the sea.

So very sad especially at this time of year
I still think it is an automatic reaction, I know I would do the same.

A holidaymaker has drowned while trying to rescue one of his dogs from the sea in Cornwall.

The man got into difficulties at Portmellon near Mevagissey while walking with his pets at about 11:00 GMT, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

Officers called the death a "tragic accident".

It is a natural instinct but I think people just don't realise the effect cold water has on the human body. It's England in January and I went swimming in the sea in the Bahamas one December swimming with wild Dolphins and on diving in could hardly breathe due to the cold water. It was either breathe or swim I couldn't do both and I'm a strong swimmer. I stay away from the sea and rivers with my dogs in winter.

Very tragic

If it had happened to us and I tried to save Rocky, it wouldn't have been by diving in as I knew he was a better swimmer than me - it would have been by trying to get a boat out, or a rope of some sort or some other way.

As Azz said, generally dogs are better swimmers some have two coats (Extra buoancy) and Newfies even have a bit of webbing between their toes (Like ducks etc) so getting a boat out, or a line, or something, would be a better course of action.

I suppose it's a very scary situation and people who are not trained don't think clearly in those situations.

That's such a shame. I believe that two other people and the dog were saved.

I read that two people were saved but that it was 'unclear' as to what happened to the dog. Just hope the dog is OK
