Growth on foot

Our 4 year old German shepherd has a growth on her hind foot that is similar to a toe pad, but isn't. We noticed it about a year ago. It hasn't gotten any bigger. Vet we used to see said watch and see if it gets bigger, if not don't worry. The new vet we just saw wants to cut it off. Don't have a real feel what vet is right. Our vet we trusted for 20 years just retired so don't know which way to go. Any ideas?

I'm not a vet, but personally I would take the advice of your first vet. As it has remained dormant for a long period of time, it is very unlikely to be cancerous, although if you were worried you could have a biopsy done. With dogs I personally believe that if things ain't broke, don't fix them.

Hth ... good luck!

Is this an actual growth or could it be a dew claw pad without the claw.
Are you able to post a picture?

Decided to agree with Gnasher, monitor the growth and not have the surgery. Important to have a vet you have trust in and know has done the right things in the past. Thanks for the advice.

Glinka, In case you missed the post above, it looks like you have a retired vet who is happy to give an opinion if you can post a picture.

It is worth seeing what they think as it's a very kind offer.

Hi glinka it could be a Histiocytoma , they a very common growth affecting feet of dogs and they can grow quite big.

Look it up under 'images' on Google and see if they compare to the growth your dog has.

Histiocytoma are usually benign, I have had a few on my dogs over the years. Many go in three months, the biggest problem is the dog may 'worry' them so they become ulcerated.
The last time I had a dog with one it became ulcerated and was removed at the same time my dog was spayed so only one general anaesthetic was required.
