I'm at my wit's end

To cover the basics. My 8 month old German Shepherd can only hold her urine for 2 hours. She's lathargic, she smells very musty, she easily dehydrates.

I've been to two vets now, and hired a behavior specialist.

She was tested for UTI, Cushings, diabetes, she's had blood work and cultures she's stayed over night, she's had an ultra sound to check her ureter everything comes back fine.

She knows where to go potty she runs to the door and whines every time she needs to go if we don't address it asap she voids then sits sadly with her ears down. We have tried making her hold it past 2 hours but she just can't.

The vets have zero suggestions they just keep saying she's fine. Crating her results in the same thing she just can't hold it.

I can't live like this and I have no ideas we have spent 4k in vet bills just to be told she's normal.

When she stayed overnight did she do the same thing? What are you feeding her? Maybe it is to dry and giving her kidneys too much work.

Poor puppy, she should not be lethargic at 8 months. Although you say her samples were normal, she must be passing quite dilute urine if she is not able to hold it for longer than two hours. I take it that her kidneys have been screened for possible malformation. Has she been tested for diabetes insipidus, (water diabetes), as well as the more common, (sugar), form?

I assume that her kidneys have been tested and that the tests included an x-ray of the bladder area?

Questions: Has she been spayed? Is she aware that she needs to urinate or is the urine dribbling out without her being aware? Are you finding urine on her bedding or where she naps? Your first step is to determine if this is a urinary incontinence of a lower urinary problem (infection, etc). If she is aware that she has to urinate and she can't hold it and piddles, and the results of the urinalysis is pretty normal, have them check her vaginal area. Vaginitis in puppies if very common and often the urinalysis will not reveal the problem. If this is the case, she will likely be licking the vulva area frequently and often will find some mucous discharge coming from the area. If this is the case, I would treat it topically. Lots of vets will treat with oral antibiotics but I don't like this approach as the puppy is trying to establish its normal bacterial population in the gut and antibiotics will interfere with that. If she is leaking without being aware and she has been spayed, then they will likely put her on Proin to control the leaking. I no longer use this drug due to the side effects. I like to use Chinese herbs for them. Good luck and let us know.
