External hard drive question

I've just added an external 500Gb hard drive to my PC and moved all my pics onto it to free up the PC.

What I wasn't sure of was ....Do I turn it off when i'm not uploading from it / writing to it or do I leave it on all the time.

I only ask as it's become really really hot.

I tend to leave mine on but it does`nt really matter so long as you switch it on when you want to load to it or to open whats in there

I only switch mine on if I am moving photos on to it or moving things from pc to pc. The rest of the time it is disconnected completely from the pc.

When mine is not in use it is off, no point it being left on wasting power
