I wouldn't agree that early neutering is the answer. Far preferable would be owners who took dogs on for life with the responsibility that comes with it, that they trained and socialised their dogs and taught them to live within consistent boundaries.

I honestly believe in the majority of cases is beneficial to castrate early you may get odd case of humping but from what I have seen very rare.
I wouldnt expect a SENSIBLE owner to castrate there dogs if was no need but defo x breeds imo should be done at 6 months.
why do you think crossbreeds should be done at 6 months?
are all crossbreeds owned by non-sensible people?
castration alone is not a cure,im sure if these people had castrated them as you say, they probably would still of ended up comming to you anyway
anyhow im fed up with 'numpty 'owners today too

My previous dog Max was not neutered till 17 months he was not a serial humper but we had him done because there are a lot of un-speyed bitches walked right outside our house and I didn't fancy a huge Aus Shepherd x Rottie taking off one day.

Ollie was done at 6 months he would try to hump other dogs male or female if given the chance but I use to not allow him, (before being neutered.)

He was always a nervous dog and I feel having him done so early has not helped his nervousness at all my other dog was full of confidence with people and dogs, Ollie is nervous of a lot of people and does not like some dogs. He is very interested in in-season bitches and those just coming into or out of season he tries to hump them but gets it all wrong again I stop him, I have also found he is a target to be humped by other male dogs and this is what has partly made him wary of other dogs and I have heard having your male dog neutered can make it a problem for them.

I am not against neutering but if I get a male again I will have them done around the 18 month old mark if needed.

Er yes what is there to gain by breeding a x breed its not going to be furthering a breed is it? Just bring more unwanted pups in the world.
My x breed ridge x boxer was speyed at 6 months not an ounce of problem lovely calm girl.
When we get young ones in we always spey/castrate at 6 months never any probs and this is weekly basis we spey.

In the last week we have taking in 8 males between 10-18 months and we just cant take any more am turning them away daily.
They all exhibit humping being the biggest problem, dominance, and just general hypo and what I would say no manners.
I am a huge fan of early castration from what I have seen it stops the behaviour before it starts and becomes habit. It seems other rescues are having same probs with young males.
I am so so lucky Kato is tolerant with these young uns when they 1st come in and hypo he really is helping me teach them manners and boundaries.

Gosh where to start....I'm sorry you are having to turn away so many and that there are so many that are coming to you at the moment.

I think I am also sorry that you do not see the behaviours you described are perfectly normal of a dog of that age whether neutered or un-neutered in a new and stressful situation.
We have some dogs come and stay here who exhibit this behaviour - despite the fact they are neutered (and were done young)

from you working in a rescue point of view i can see what you are saying, but not every unneutered dog sires a litter!and what only pedigrees should exist in this world? hmmmm
what works for you doesnt always for another.its how you bring the dog up not wether it can have/sire pups!

I am totally pro neutering (because I volunteer for Dog's Trust) but I think it won't help with behavioural problems unless the owners are willing to step up and be the boss.

I think dogs should be neutered so there aren't any 'accidents' (how many times do we hear about 'accidents' ?), but my rescue dog was neutered at approx. 10 months and he likes to hump other dogs.

So, along with good training and consistent boundaries castration is a good thing imo.

I can also understand how Kc is feeling, it's very frustrating.
