Internet again

A friend of mine wants to go on the internet and has been asking my advice (well its not often that someone knows even LESS than me, so I have to make the most of it ) It was about 2 1/2 years ago that we first went on the internet and we did it with Freeserve (now Wanadoo) and paid monthly. She is thinking of going with the Virgin one that I think Leo suggested last week, the one with no contract. She wants to try connecting to the internet on her phone line first though - am I right in thinking that you can just connect but not actually be with a ISP and it just goes on your phone bill - I think it is 1p a minute after 6pm. She has wired up the connection but doesn't know how to connect can anybody give me a step by step guide what to do next please

Which Operating System has she got ?

She can do a Pay-As-You-Go (however, the 1p/min charge is Off-peak). This normally necessites getting a CD from somewhere, if she hasn't got a connection already.

For the time being, she can try this one:

Can give you extra instructions once I know the Operating System.

Hi Roy, she has told me that it is XP, although I haven't seen it so don't know. She has connected the wire but doesn't know what to do next - don't you have to run some internet Wizzard or something like that?

If you print out this page, you should be able to set it up using the details given in the previous link.

Windows XP: http://www.fpdial.com/setupwinxp.asp

If she doesn't have XP, settings for Win98/Me: http://www.fpdial.com/setupwin958ME.asp

You need to be with a company first
Usually you can pick up CD's in shops etc
Just put the CD in the drive, and run it, following instructions
