Puppy Starter Pack

Hi Everyone, my OH and I are thinking about getting a puppy and just wanted to start thinking about what things we would need to get for a puppy, toys, bedding, food etc, was wondering if anyone could help us with making a list of things that we would need for a new puppy?

It depends on the breed of dog you are going to get but my list of essentials would be (in no particular order):

• Dog crate with proper bedding
• Puppy pads (for little accidents)
• Blanket
• Towels
• additional bed if the pup is not going to be in the crate all the time
• Toy box
• selection of puppy toys - ball, Kong, cuddly toy - absolute essentials
• puppy collar and lead
• training lead (long one so pup can play safely without being off lead)
• tag - with name, telephone number and address on it
• Folder - for all the paperwork - vets, insurance and so on
• Dog bowls - one for food and one for water - small to begin with
• storage tubs (for food)
• poo bags
• poop scoop
• car harness
• and not essential but handy - a bag for when you're out and about on walks (water bottle, travel water bowl, pockets for treats and so on)

Chew toys!!! Get plenty of the little soft puppy bones - you WILL need them!

If Takara is anything to go by, don't bother with puppy pads, we spent a fortune on them only to find that she would pee next to them instead of on them

If you have a flagstone or lino floor put newspaper down, much cheaper, catches most of it and anything that soaks through can be mopped up.
If you have carpet and want to get puppy pads, I suggest getting the puppy pad holder to go with them because Takara would scrunch hers up.

Having said that, she did like lying on them... we'd come home to find the bed ripped up, Takara laid on a clean puppy pad and an accident just next to it

oooh that's what else - I recommend getting a clicker too. You can start little bits of training from the day they come home (well, give them some time to settle in ) and a clicker will help with lead training and house training as well as recall, sit, down etc. etc.

And of course, all your books! Lots and lots of books!
