Would Your Dog Go Back To The Breeder?

This is obviously more of a question for those of us with dogs bought from a breeder, but all thoughts welcome regardless.

A lot of breeders on here always say they have it in their contract for any unwanted dog to go back to them should they become unwanted. In reality though, would you really choose to do this?

With Isla, if I had to make the heart breaking decision to rehome her I think I'd rather do it myself. After owning her for 5 years I'd like to think I could find the right home for her, rather than her breeder who knew her for 8 weeks and hasn't seen her for 5 years!

Oscar on the other hand would be a nightmare to rehome so I think for his safety I would contact his breeder as they have a vast knowledge of the breed and bred both of his parents.

Not a nice thread I know, I'd be gutted to have to say goodbye to either of them, but it was just something that had been knocking around in my brain, especially when Oscar and Rossi started to fall out and I had to initially consider rehoming Oscar.

So any thoughts, how easy would your dog be to rehome and would that influence your rehoming decision?

I'd be like you with Isla - if my dogs are ever going to be rehomed they are done through me and Dogsey

As mine are mutts they don't have a breeder as such, Louie's breeder/farm owner has one of the unwanted pups from a previous litter they had but I wouldn't let someone else rehome my dog.

Benjie came from the RSPCA - they had no clue about him then and probably wouldn't as when the RSPCA man took Megan for temp boarding - I told him all about her and he cut me off and said we'll see to it - I know the dog yet he wouldn't listen - so I emailed where she's staying and told them everything

Sadie - as she isn't my dog if her owners ever had to rehome - she'd come to me and she wouldn't be leaving my side!

Well my answer is pretty easy with Ludi. If I ever had to rehome him then he would definitely go back to his breeder as I know they would keep him

With Ozzy then I would rather rehome him myself so I could make sure he went to a good new home. Mind you it would only take 5 minutes to rehome him as he a soooo perfect and gorgeous

God forbid I should ever be in that position though

I would rather Parker go back to his breeders to find a new home as they would have Kerry-experienced people as they have a specific rescue that we were on the waiting list for as they are a rare breed. He is a lovely dog with no "issues" so anyone who had him would be very fortunate!

Cherry, sad to say, I would not want to be rehomed as she does have issues around other dogs and even though she is brilliant in the home and the perfect dog indoors she may be a different story when out on walks! I have spent years learning to manage and improve her behaviour but would not trust her to anyone else (hope that doesn't sound arrogant!).

At their age ( Parker 9 and Cherry nearly 10) it would be heartbreaking to have to rehome them. I guess they would adjust even at their age? When we got them 7 years ago they settled in straightaway and didn't pine for their previous owners at all which surprised me.

Yes, without a doubt, all 4 would go back to their breeder...... but then again it says something that all four come from the same breeder.

I suppose for me this is similar to "would your dog go back to the rescue?" In the case of the rescue I got her from, the contract was only that if I couldn't find a proper home for her then I could always bring her back and they would taker her back. Of course, the woman stopped running a rescue in the past year or so so I'm not even sure how that would work out. But that being said, it would be a last resort only. Dahlia is such an easy dog, so well behaved and sweet that I could find many people who would happily take her. I think my friends would be clamoring to take her. I've had offers from many people to watch her if we want to go away for a weekend.

It would be an absolute nightmare for me to rehome Zena, coz being a gsd she only has eyes for her owner, and I know she wouldn't even let anybody else walk her let alone home her, I'm sure she'd run away if I'm honest. It states in my contract that I would HAVE to return her to my breeder if ever the day came (which it never will!), and that's what I'd do I think, as I trust her explicitly that she would find THE right home for her. Oh God forbid that ever happens to us though, she'd die of a broken heart if she didn't have me and visa versa!

Yes, Kiba would go back to his breeder if I absolutely had to rehome him and I would hope (and think) that she would keep him. She's not a breeder we just bought a pup from and never contacted again, she's now a very good friend and we go on walks very often with her and Kiba's littermates and other dogs she has bred and have a lovely time. Because Kiba has issues with separation he would need quite a specialised home if he was rehomed and I know she would involve me in the rehome process if I wanted to be.

However, I would lose my house and marriage and parents and have no-where else to go before I would even think about rehoming him! Like Helena's Zena Kiba definitely only has eyes for me and he is my soulmate so it would break my heart if I had to give him up. He's like a child to me and I wouldn't rehome my kids

Ok, if it ever came to it.....
Teagan would def not go back to her 'breeder' (I use the term loosely).
Hopefully Isochick would have her, but if not, I would have her PTS.
VERY harsh I know, but she has so many health and behaviour issues - it would not be fair to pass them on to someone who doesn't know her in and out (Like Iso and myself does)

I think this makes a big difference tbh. Isla's breeder lives over 300 miles away (well one half, the other half lives in the south of France!). As much as we stay in contact via email and I trust him completely, I don't think I could send Isla all that way to someone she's never met and who doesn't know her from adam. If her breeder was local and we met up regularly then that would make all the difference. It's perhaps why I would feel more inclined to send Oscar to back to his breeder. He only live 10 minutes away and is one of the most knowledgeable people in the breed in the UK. And boy would Oscar need that someone special to take him on!

I don't think it's harsh, it's not pleasant, but if it's better for the dog then that's what's important. As hard as it might be to admit.
