The missing £1....

Three business men met up for lunch in a restaurant.

They each chose their meals, and ordered with the waiter.

The bill came to £30, so they all paid £10 each.

The waiter brought them their food, and took the money to the cashier.

The cashier, noticed a mistake - the bill was actually £25,

so he told the waiter to give them a refund of £5.

The waiter (being a little dodgy) thought, I'll give the men back
£1 each and keep the £2 change, they'll be none the wiser!",

which he did, and the men were happy.

So here's the puzzle - the men all paid £10, had a refund of £1,

so therefore they had all paid £9; 3 x £9 = £27.
The waiter kept £2; £27 + £2 = £29.

The bill originally came to £30 - so where's the missing £1 ??

Very good Geoff, took me a while, but I've worked it out. There is no missing pound.

The men were initially charged £30. It should only have been £25, so £5 must be returned and accounted for.
£3 is given to the 3 friends, £2 is kept by the waiter - there you have the £5
