Unless your dog has a 0;0 hip score then it has HD, it is the severity that causes the problems. It can come genetically, but also can be caused environmentally by incorrect feeding and over exercise. I have heard of many dogs with low scoring parents who themselves have high scores, so although genetic inheritance can play a bit part, so can the new puppy owner. I stick to the 5 minutes rule and then gradually start lengthening the time out after 1 year old. Until then I mostly exercise offload and may do some road walking but no longer than 10 - 15 minutes.

I have never followed the 5 min rule, I dont do forced walking - the lead is kept for the clubs which they attend from 11 weeks, mine are allowed as much free running as they wish I cant see a problem going upstairs if anything it would be coming down that will put pressure on shoulders and elbows - a GSD is allowed to complete the AD at 14/16 month dependent on country how can you get the dog ready for this if not exercised, too little exercise is just as bad as too much as you dont get the gluteal muscle development which helps to stabilise the 'ball' in the 'socket' - highest hip score I have had is 2:4 lowest 0:0

It`s forced exercise the rule is about isn`t it? As in lead walking?
Pups will leap about playing themselves then stop when tired. That`s also exercise.
Common sense should tell people what is good for a youngster.

Yes but common sense is no longer common, unfortunately. The number of times I see large breed puppies advertised 'as ready to go on walks' shows me that . If even the people breeding haven't a clue, then the owners won't know either

I'm sorry, I mean 'get' as in 'develops' (my fault).

I agree with this. And how do you socialise a puppy if is only going out for a very short time each day?

Ace gets free running for quite a bit longer than 5 mins to every month of his life. So did my last dog and he was a very fit 14 year old when he died. He had to be pts because of liver and kidney failure.

You up the amount of exercise as they grow up, and has been said they get free running. Mine are still socialised, but I gradually extend the times they are out and the type of things they do.

I don't think that rigid 5 minute per month timescale leaves enough time for socialisation for all dogs. Some breeds need a lot more time spent on it than others. My GSP needed very little whereas my GSD needs (and gets) quite a lot.

I have an 11 week old Australian Cattle Dog pup and this pup is active for pretty much the whole day, he does tire at times and sleep of his own accord but if I crate him when he's not ready for it he'll spend his time trying to dig his way out. He runs around the garden, plays constantly with the other dogs and I'd say the exercise he gets is way more than the 5-minute rule!

I also need to get him out and about to socialise him and this in addition to the amount of exercise he gets at home.
