If the male dog lives with the female it is not uncommon for her to refuse the familiar dog but will be happy to mate with a different one. Ideally, you put an experienced bitch with a young dog - you may also have the problem that neither of them know what to do.

Surely if the poster is being mentored then the importance of health tests will have been covered and both dogs hip/elbow scored and the eyes checked, although really the eyes should be checked by 8 weeks of age as MRD lesions can disappear by the time they are 1 year of age, no reputable breeder would breed from non health tested dogs.

You are so right on that one, I always fall into the trap of thinking everyone has the same high standards as I do, most of the time I am bitterly disappointed by what I find out later on down the line.
