DNA for Juvenile Cataracts and Late Onset Cataracts info needed !

Right someone I know has a breed who Genetesists have successfully found the DNA marker for Juvenile Cataracts.

However, last year she wanted to breed from one of her Bitches, but after having her eyes test, was found to have late onset Cataracts.

She decided because of this not to breed from her, although a new problem has arisen.

She recently had the same bitch tested for Juvenile Cataracts and was found to be clear, so that type of Cataracts will not be passed on, and her 'new' way of thinking is that as no-one can tell when Late onset Cataracts will show up (if ever) and they have no way of knowing whether it is, in fact, hereditary, it shouldn't be a problem to breed from a dog with it, as it's not as serious as the Juvenile Cataracts and it "might" not be hereditary !!!

I've tried to explain to her that the dog has 'A' form of Cataracts, full stop, therefore she should not be bred from, but I also see what she is saying makes sense, as there is no way of knowing if late onset is hereditary or not.

Does anyone know of any definitive papers I could print off to show her that she's wrong about this.

Thanks

Just to add I won't give the breed as this person comes on here as a Guest to read posts sometimes, and she knows I have a lot of friends who are breeders, so it could be any one of them.

It's the information I'm after not speculation.

Hang on - you asked for documentation to prove you were right. Well I can't provide it because you aren't - It doesn't matter what I would or wouldn't do, that isn't what you asked for.

It all depends on whether it is a hereditary condition or not. Dogs with hereditary conditions should not be bred from, but if it is not a hereditary condition then it will not be passed on.

HTH.

You have a Malamute..............did your breeder not tell you that NO dog with Cataracts should be bred from, regardless of which type it could be ?? Hence why Malamutes are eye tested yearly !

Edited to add : Late onset Cataracts is classed as hereditary by Eye specialists even though they don't know whether it is or not, just in case.

Actually I have two :smt002 However we aren't talking about Mals are we

Tara, I have done copius amounts of research into cataracts and I suggest you do the same if you unwilling to accept anyone elses views. I also suggest that you go and tell two rather well respected opthamologists that they are wrong.
