Mum has broken her Spine

Just recovering from the shock of a phonecall from my dad followed by a phonecall to the hospital. My mum fell and broke her spine this morning and is in Hospital. They have carried out various tests and are waiting on the results. She has really bad osteoporosis as it is and I am really worried about her.

The nurse I spoke to said she thinks it is a T12 fracture which is not usually treated with surgery (whhich is good as 2 years ago she broke her hip had surgery and ended up with MRSA)

Think I am in shock. She is heavily sedated with Morphine and the nurse says there is no point in me going up there tonight

Its just when you hear things llike spinal injuries... it kinda freaks me out

Thanks guys, I'm just freaking out a bit here. Hopefully it will be ok and my dad is taking stuff to the hospital for her tonight so should get to speak to a doc so maybe we will know more then. Its funny how these things can give you an INSTANT splitting headache but doubt it is anything like the pain she will be in

Thanks for you thoughts and good wishes

What a terrible shock. Fingers crossed that she can recover quickly and without too much pain. Thinking of you.

I'm so sorry to hear the news about your poor mum. Is it good news that they don't operate?, sorry I didn't really understand that bit, does it mean she could recover without an op.

My thoughts are with you and your family wishing your mum a speedy recovery xx

Thanks everyone

Sheree, I am not really sure about the operation bit either but have asked dad to check as I think they said that they treat it with mobilisation and painkillers and a brace to prevent the fracture from causing any nerve damage, and they cant operate (or at least they dont routinely operate) due to a high risk of damage to the nerves and then possible paralysis.

Thats part of the tests they have carried out aswell to see if there has already been any damage done when she was writhing in agony waiting on ambulance

Its just a shock, I mean I am 33 and I just havn't grasped the fact that my parents are NOT invincible

Thanks for everyones wishes its so kind of you all
