How do you leave the tips of claws..

I never know how you are supposed to leave the tips of claws when you cut them ..
How are yours dogs left . ?

I thought you were always supposed to cut them from top to bottom as cutting them across hurts the dog? I watched a video about it and it said this, so don't blame me lol! That means I leave a point here!

I worry about cutting the quick so i cut the tip straight across then road walk them down to a point - then rinse and repeate

As nobody really looks at them, neither am I going to varnish them, when I clip them every week I go about it the same way as a horse, the dog lifts each foot up whilst I clip each nail, including his dewclaws.

They then are straight, until the next day when they appear to grow overnight.
