Whenever I go see my vet he gets so annoyed with me because I ask him
all sorts of questions about things I read on the internet.

You have a great weekend as well, and thanks for your help.

Don't really know about the Vit C, but for hips???? You really need something like glucosomene for that, the purer the better. Look it up if you haven't heard of it!!! It's brilliant stuff for joints both humans and animals.

Good luck with the vet. You're at work and I'm off to bed!!

Hi L, too much VitC can cause dire/rear but it will stop as soon as you minimise the dose, you need to give it to whats called *bowel tolerance
How much are you giving her, you say 2 tabs but how many gms is in each one?

Hello all. Well, I brought a stool sample down to my vet on Saturday and
I just called for the results. It was negative for all parasites. I don't know
if that's good or bad. If it was positive at least I'd know what was causing
the mucus. Since the mucous appears every now and again, I'm wondering
if she could have a mild case of colitis that flares up every now and then.

My old dog seemed to suffer with this quite frequently, if he had something different to eat or too much, any small thing could start it up. We found Chappie one of the best foods to put him on, not too rich. Whenever I have had stomach problems with my dogs Chappie has always worked.

Yes, I've heard that too about Chappie, its full of cereals I think. Apparently I can feed it to my dog who has EPI as it won't upset her, so it must be good for bowel intolerances. Maybe try it if you can get it over there?

Just as a matter of interest, what breed of dog is she? If you're still investigating on the internet, have you read up about EPI??? It's very typical in gsd's and some other breed, but I can't remember what that other breed is. Just punch in EPI or Pancreatic enzyme deficiency and have a good read, you might recognise some symptoms. I AM NOT saying your dog has this, but it does start with mucousy stools and grey in colour - are hers grey or putty coloured? If you think these are her symptoms, why not mention it to your vet, I'm sure he understands you want to get to the bottom of this, and there is one specific test they do for it, but it's very expensive £100 over here Your vet will know if there is a possibility of her having this or not, he might be adamant that it isn't, he's the only one who will know, but it wouldn't show up in a normal blood test.

Hi Helena, my dog is a Border collie/Husky mix.

I went on the internet (of course ) and at your suggestion, looked up
pancreatic enzyme deficiency. The following list of symptoms came up:

Chronic diarrhea
Excessive food intake
Weight loss
Flatulence (gas)
Coprophagia (eating feces)
Pica (eating unusual things such as dirt)
Borborygmus (a rumbling noise caused by gas passing through the intestines)

She doesn't have any of these symptoms. She's had excessive food
intake since she was a puppy. She loves eating!! But, other than
that she hasn't displayed any symptoms. Her stool is brown to dark
brown, so I'm guessing that's normal. The mucous is not there everyday,
which leads me to believe that it could be a flare up of colitis or something.
I'm going to monitor her and see how she's doing and if the mucous persists,
I'll bring her in to see the vet.

Well that's good news then Leslie, you can rule that one out now Sounds like some sort of irritable bowel probably caused by some food or other that you're giving her? If you haven't done it already, I would try and eliminate things by cutting out certain treats or additives you give with her food (one by one)? I know another good idea you could do too, which I have done with my dogs in the past. Keep a daily log of everything she eats, absolutely everthing including titbits, treats etc. and do another column at the end for her stool situation. You may just find something staring at you at the end of a month maybe? Obviously, the stool situation if bad, would relate to something she ate the day before. Are you catching my drift here!! It might be worth it as it seems to be an intermittent thing with her doesn't it. Good luck, let's hope you don't see any further mucous in her poo anyway

Thanks Helena. It could be anything. She takes a lot of vitamins and eats
a lot of fruits and vegetables. Plus, she's very sneaky. When I take her
out on walks, she'll pretend she's sniffing something on the ground and
before I know it, she's chewing!!

There was a little mucous this morning. But nothing significant. I'm
really relieved that she doesn't have any parasites, but I wish I had a
definitive answer as to what is causing it.
