Diarrhea

Ok then, as i mentioned here couple times already we have 8 weeks old Beagle puppy. We brought her in one week ago and last Thursday found worm in her poo. Gave her pill and she got clean out of worms by this Monday.

But now we have another problem - diarrhea. It started same day we gave her worming pill (last Thursday). Since then it have been one week and it is still the same. First of all we gave her dry food Royal Canin (our vet gave it too us). Then we switched to chicken/rise for a couple days which made no difference.

Her poo sometimes like a water and she goes toilet quite often. Sometimes in her poo very light blood spots (not dark blood but very light). We spoke with specialist and she advised us that it can happen when one of the capillars in her anus is broken.

Anyway, we brought her to the vet yesterday who measured temperature and everything is fine. Also she gave us different Royal Canin food in cans (chicken/rise) and Pro-Kolin squeesable cream which should help our puppy. We gave it twice to her yesterday with new food, but she still spent all night suffering from diarrhea. Same this morning.

Otherwise our puppy is very-very lively, plays a lot and bites, eats like a grown horse and always hungry. It doesn't seems like she ill or something. Did anyone had same experience before? Our vet told us to bring her in again tomorrow if she will still have diarrhea, but also told us that it doesn't seems like infection or something

By the way, tonight puppy pooed in her crate, we cleaned it but since this moment she done the same two more times. I believe this is due to the fact she can still sence the smell and i will re-clean it one more time.

Any advises? What can it be?

Thanks

You could give her some really well cooked boiled rice with some cooked chicken for a couple of days and let her tummy settle . Are you giving her anything else which could be upsetting her or does she just get her food ?

Actually we gave her rice and chicken for a couple days but it made no difference. And we are not giving her anything else at all, only water and dog food

This is very common when a pup goes to a new home, the new home has different water and different bugs to the home where it was born and upsets are almost to be expected.

It is too late now but I always bring a supply of the breeders water back so the pup can change over slowly and never change the food the breeder gave for at least 3 weeks and then do it very slowly.

As you now have a problem I would seek the help of your vet and abide by their instructions, diarrhoea in a pup can be serious because of dehydration.

The chemical worming pills are extremely toxic and will often cause diarrhoea and blood in the stool, so I would say that is definitely the cause.

IMO they are to be avoided in preference for other more natural alternatives.

Here's some info on it: http://www.thewholedog.org/wormout.html

I would recommend a chicken broth - simmer some bone-in chicken in a pan of water with some cabbage (and rice if you want) in it. Once cooked - remove the cabbage and bones and leave to cool. Once cooled, skim off any fat and serve the chicken and some of the broth.

Continue with this for at least a day, preferably 2 or even 3 and when diarrhoea stops, you can start giving a little cooked (or raw) chicken, then build up slowly to real food. Something like Naturediet would be superb.

I would also give Lectade to avoid dehydration. Diluted honey is also useful for this - a quarter teaspoon honey to one dessertspoonful of tepid water at least 6 times a day.

I would also give half a teaspoon of Slippery Elm Bark Powder mixed into a goo with tepid water four times a day - Slippery Elm Bark Powder is great for easing the digestive tract - it has a mucousy quality to it and soothes real quick. They love the taste so you'll have no problems with it.

Well you may be right but millions of puppies have been wormed by thousands of breeders for at least 50 years with out them all suffering from bloody diarrhoea so I don't see why it should have suddenly become the dangerous thing to do, not worming is as a pup carrying a worm load will not flourish.

I would advise you to consult a vet and follow their advice but that is your decision.

We already seen vet yesterday and at the moment doing exactly what he said. The reason i'm writing here is to check if someone else had same problem and what happen in the end.

By the end, her stool is getting better so fingers crossed she will be fine soon.
