Proud of My Callie
Something simple but I was pleased with him this morning. I went out to my car to get a bag and didn't close the door right behind me as usual. As I unlocked the door there was Callie standing beside me.
Momentary panic, I never let him off leash for a minute in public. He's good natured and easygoing with other dogs. But he is protective of strangers approaching me. He won't think anything of marching up to male humans and standing in front of them "That's my Mom, you want to even look at her you go through ME!".
So even for the few seconds we were out there I was worried about some guy passing by to be scared witless. But fortunately no one was out and he walked in step with me up the stairs and back in the house. He got a nice scratch and cookie for that.
It's good to know in an emergency that he probably will listen to me. The bigger and stronger your pup, the more important recall is. I enforce it positively. I never call them by name to come if they misbehave. Usually I just give a low "HEYYYY" and both dogs drop their heads. If I call you by name you're getting a treat or some lovin'.
