Crying Over Squeaky Toys

Just wondered if anyone else has a dog that does this. Anton used to have a squeaky rugby ball, and whenever he bit it hard enough to squeak, he immediately stopped and started whining with his ears all droopy! Then he'd carry it off really carefully so that it didn't squeak (and it was a pretty sensative toy) and lie down with it in between his paws, licking it.

We've since taken it off him because we though it might be upsetting him too much when people came over and accidently squeaked it.

My old collie cross used to cry at her toys. And we discovered that one certain squeaky ball let out a really high squeal if you squeaked it into water. She would start to cry then carry it gently away and then mother it! I wonder if the high pitch of some toys reminds them of the sounds puppies make and brings out the mothering instinct?

Aww, bless, I've never heard of a dog doing that.

Most of mine have loved to make toys squeek (much to OH's annoyance) and the only one who doesn't, just doesn't like that kind of toy (she only plays with tennis balls).

he sounds like a really sensitive wee chap

I thought it might be something to do with a mothering instinct... and then I remembered Anton was male. He is a funny one.

Maybe he's just in touch with his feminine side!

Kali and Snorri-dog (BCs) used to go ballistic at squeaky toys, but with ferocity! I wondered if it was because it might resemble the sound of a small animal getting killed?
