Sorry to hear the news was not good, but you seemed to have done a good job of explaining it to him, I always think its best to keep it simple for little ones, they dont need to much information, and as you have found, he has accepted it well.

Now your other dilemma is going to be , whether Luca goes to the funeral.

My own personal feeling on this is , they are to young to experience such sadness, seeing their parents and family members crying and upset can be very traumatic for them.
