Scared of own pup?

No, not me! Although the rate Murphy is growing, I'm scared he'll break my toes if he stands on them!!

At puppy class the other day, one of the other "mums" was asking if it's alright for her puppy to meet and play with fully grown dogs.

Of course, the answer was "As long as your puppy is fully vaccinated and you are in control of the situation, then it's good socialisation for puppy to meet other dogs"

The owner then went on to say that she was scared of full-grown dogs of her chosen breed as they were so big and they might be viscious with her puppy. She said that if she see's one out, even on a lead, she'll go out of her way to avoid it, as it could hurt her puppy!

Why get a dog of a known breed (i.e. not a cross breed) when you're scared of a full-grown one and will cross the road to get away from it?

Goodness knows what message she's sending to her kids and the puppy!

BTW, her puppy is a gorgeous girlie, who is quite bossy, but loves a rough and tumble with the other puppies (Murphy, a mastiff cross, a springer, a Lhasa, a labrador etc)

Oh dear, she'll pass all this negative feeling to the pup.
I personally would not have a certain breed if I felt I couldn't cope with it. Why would yo buy a puppy if you are nervous of that breed???

I hope she becomes more confident, and relaxing some more.

That's what I thought!

If I was scared of Boxers, why would I buy one?
If I was scared of JRT's why would I buy one?

It is strange isn't it? To go and get a pup that you are going to be nervous of when grows up.
I know it is irrelevant what breed it is, but is it a breed that needs a confident handler, and is going to walk over her when grown up.

I hope she finds someone who can help her with her confidence, as I am sure she loves the puppy.

Yes, it's a large breed dog that needs a strong, confident handler.

Generally I don't think the breed matters, but to buy a dog that you're scared of is just really strange!

this is a disaster waiting to happen, the only good point is she is at least trying to socialise the pup with older dogs which she is not scared of,,,so not all doom, but I cant fathom why on earth anyone would buy a breed they are afraid of ,,,,unless its for all the wrong reasons, eg need security, guard dog, or the likes, the mind boggles,

Why would you get something you are afraid of?

I don't understand? Surely she's paid for this pup aswell, is she aware of what it will grow into or is she planning not to keep it that long?

Obviously she is tarring them all with the same brush (once an adult anyway) so surely she thinks hers will be the same once grown up. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?

*leaves thread more confused than usual* :smt043

ETA: Don't you usually buy a pup BECAUSE you LIKE the adult version?

*confused and baffled with the human race*

MAJOR UPDATE

I got talking to her today after training.....

Her dog is a.....

wait for it......

Rottie X Dachsie

Little (!!) Mia looks exactly like a Rottie, is the size I would expect a 17-20 week old Rottie to be and is bolshy enought to be a Rottie too ( )

Apparantly they wanted a small dog and the 6-8 week old pups were "really small and cute"

Hhmm, did she not think that since their mum was a large breed dog, that her "really small and cute" pup wouldn't be a small and cute dog??

And even though she is a crossbreed, surely you would buy a cross if it was crossed with a breed you didn't like??

As confused as Kel now!

OMG I do not even want to think about the workings of that. Seriously thats a dog that could grow up to have a LOT of health issues.
