I think they are saying that scientists believed that animals's emotions were reflexive.
Emotions are primitive and necessary for survival , our oldest part of the brain is the part that deals with emotions and the thinking brain came later.

Hamsters have emotions 100%. Every animal or living thing in the world has emotions, even. You know when they show those commercials of the dogs and cats sad at the shelters because of the abuse that their owners put them through for no reason? Their eyes all look teary and lost and sad. This is because they don't know why they were put through that abuse and they want a new home. They want someone to care for them and love them. Lots of people don't realize it, and think "it's just a dog, they won't have any feelings", but they actually do.

I believe dogs have emotions. My rat terrier shows fear, love, happiness, sadness. we do call these emotions human, but I consider my dog one of the family and not just a pet.

I have had only one dog and that is the dog I have now. She does indeed have emotions but I believe all animals have emotions. I do think that everything with them is transient, fear, sadness, happiness. I do believe that some things stay with them long term. Abuse is something that is stored longterm and thats why we see such distrust in abused animals.

Really? This needs to be proven scientifically? Was there any doubt in the first place?

Has the person who ask this question ever spent time with a real dog?

I Believe so. I only say this because when my grandmother was in the hospital our dog was extremely depressed and seemed to be moping around the house, and when my dog died recently both of my remaining dogs just seemed less energetic and a bit sad.
