Smaller Young Dog/Puppy Wanted...

Hello,

I have recently posted in the introductions area and stated I was looking for a puppy up to one year old.

It can be of any sex but I will have to decide if the breed is right for me. I am based in Manchester and can pick up within a 30 mile radius.

Currently thinking along the lines of Jack Russels, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Shiba Inus. I love cheeky, strong willed breeds such as Shibas but also adore the lazy types.

Please let me know if you have a puppy looking for a forever home. I know finding the perfect puppy takes time as I have been searching for over six months to no avail.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Have you contacted your local animal shelters Kelly?
There are items in the news that because of the recession animal shelters are crying out for homes for all the abandoned dogs they have.

First of all, thank you for replying to my post Nippy.

Yes I am in regular contact with my local animal shelters as I know what is happening with the recession. So many great dogs have been abandoned in these awful times.

The only reason I have not got a puppy (as of yet) from a shelter is because the dogs are not suitable for my type of lifestyle. I would adopt all the dogs if I could but I can only accept a small, young dog that can live with children, dogs, cats and rodents. A dog with all these qualities is quite rare in shelters and I am not surprised at all considering the neglect and abuse the poor things suffer.

I am also considering volunteering at my local shelter.

I certainly wouldn`t be thinking of a terrier.. if it`s to be good with rodents.

Oh god no. The rodent I have is a chinchilla and although it does get its daily exercise, it will not be ever put with any of the other animals. Both dogs I have now are not fussed even though they know it is there. I just popped that in the ad incase any dogs are overly aggresive and try to get at other animals through the cage as I have seen this happen before.

Hi Kelly,

You mention the abuse and suffering that dogs in shelters have been through. Not all dogs in shelters have been abused.

Some dogs are in rescue because their owners have died, some because their owners can't cope with them if they';re oung and boisterous and some because they can no longer afford them.

If you're looking for a lazy dog then have you considered an older one? They're not necessarily lazy but may be clamer than their younger counterparts.

Also, there are many dogs looking for homes who are young (up to 18-24 months) and have had some training and socialisation. So it is quite possible to get a young dog/puppy who is good with dogs, cats, rodents and kids.

What exactly is your lifestyle like and how is your new dog going to fit into it? Have you thought o how you will introduce your new pet to your other pets and family?

I would keep looking in the shelters. We got Ben from a branch of the Manchester Dogs Home, based in Grappenhall. He was 6 month when we got him. He had not been abused, just left there becasue the owner,(elderly lady) could not cope with him and his brother.
There is always a good mix of breeds there and it is a nice shelter to visit.
Worth a try, and not too far from you. Grappenhall is near Warrington btw.
Good luck
