Does leather fade?

Can anyone help me please. I am thinking of having a leather suite but as the living room gets the worst of the suns fury, I wondered if leather would fade?

I have blinds that we use (to protect our eyes ) but wouldn't want to have them drawn all the time.

Hiya,
To much direct sunlight would fade it. You've got to be more care ful it soesn't crack. You can buy special wax that feeds the leather & keeps it supple. I'm sure it will be fine. Not that we have much sunlight

Morning Ashlady. Errrrrr, you are in the UK aren't you? Just your sentence re "suns fury" makes me think you're gonna be moving to Africa sometime soon.....

BTW, I have a leather suite, and it's never faded......it's navy blue.....it's never cracked either......

:smt044 @ Vicki - We haven't much else in Staffs mate, so God sends us the sun

Thanks Jackie, your sofas are beautiful so that answers my question

Hiya Jules - Hadn't thought about it cracking, thanks for the warning

We have at the moment a cloth suite that was recovered only a couple of years ago (at over £1000) and the arm protector and side on one sofa looks disgusting, it's faded that much, so I thought I could go lighter (to combat the fade) but be able to wipe any marks off leather

Think half the joy with leather is that it will 'distress' in a beautiful way, all furnishings should be protected from strong sunlight but if you use blinds it should be less of a problem than fabric.

Hi

We have a black leather suite and it's had a rough time with sun and dogs, it's never faded, cracked or marked in anyway. I personally think leather is a much more versatile alternative to a fabric suite. It is really easy to wipe clean too

Thaks for the advice guys May I ask another question?

How can you tell good leather from bad leather? Is it always to do with price?

Hmm that's a tricky one. I would have thought good leather was unblemished and soft yet sturdy? Price is a difficult one these days because leather sofas vary in price so much and some cheap ones appear to be as good as the more expensive ones
