Which is better, giving heartworm prevention pills year round or half year when threat is worse? Have done six month treatments before with vet check every year, now trying year round

It depends on how serious a problem heartworm is in the USA. It isn't here in the UK, but I understand dogs can get infected if bitten by a mosquito ... I know it is a fatal condition, so unless there were serious contra-indications, I would go down the year round route.

Heartworm is NOT fatal. It can often be successfully treated. Sometimes treatment fails or there are complications but it can definitely be treated and isn't considered a fatal disease here. It's more prevalent in certain regions. Regions where there are more mosquitoes, there is higher chance of heartworm. I've never been vigilant about it and have never had a dog get heartworm and I live in a warm climate supposedly prone to it.

From what I read it is treatable but not preventable. So I can't see the point of treating all year round but I tend to keep my dogs drug use to a minimum.
