Basically AV gives you 3 choices - and a candidate can only win if they get at least 50% of the votes.
If nobody gets 50% of the votes on the first count, the losing candidate is knocked out, and the voting slips from the people who voted for that candidate get counted again - but this time taking the second choice. If there is still not a clear winner they do the same again.
It means more people will have voted for the winning party
