In a pickle with canine constipation

Well, wee dog is constipated. Never had this issue ( or lack of it!) before... Have tried castor oil to no effect and she is not eating; am keeping her fluids up with rehydration fluid by syringe,.

The vet i thought I could trust turned out to be a charlatan and I am very wary and distrustful now and also dirt poor just now.

But I am worried and do not want to risk her health; also it is Saturday and the weekend looms

I know this may be should be in health but need reassurance.

Hi Rosebud, your dogs problem may not be due to simple constipation. She could have an impaction or any number of medical conditions. You really should see a vet.
Sorry that may not be what you want to hear.

Gosh, I'm sorry about this. My puppy had explosive diarrhea last night... but he ate his dinner and everything else was fine. Had a much firmer poo few hours ago.

He played in lots of muck yesterday and no doubt gulped down some mucky water... so I'm sure he's fine. It's happened before. I try to discourage him from drinking the stuff... but oh, well. Dogs will be dogs!

Vets here are generally garbage, too and it's hard to trust them. I have changed countless times and still am not really trusting of the vet. It's painful when you can't trust your vet with your beloved doggies safety and health. People with good vets don't realize the heartbreak it can cause.

I'm also pretty low income and big vet visits always scare the crap outta me. Huge chunks of money don't just fall out of the sky sadly. Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to easily afford very high vet costs on the dot so I know how you feel there, too.

I hope your girl is okay. If she stays off her food for another day, you'll probably have to find somewhere to take her, though sadly. Sending vibes and thoughts your way. Hang in there, the both of you!

I know; the scare I had with the other vets has left me panicked' never had anything but trouble from vets here in Ireland. checked online and the only practice I have heard ANY good about has short opening hours etc.

Long drive for that kind of thing..also barely enough money to get there and nothing comin in until next week. I live on a tiny pension

Blessings and thanks for this understanding. I am aiming out as soon as I can with her but getting her in the car...I am disabled.

She is notone to fuss needlessly BUT I am planning to make a call to breeder family in Canada before anything they suggest is agreed to. they are tougher than I am!

I am over 70 and I think some vets here make reductions,, please God so.. while I know there is no price on the life of a dog, when there is no money there is no money.

Dratted gale warning out now.

Keep us in thoughts,,,

I miss wee dog barking! Far too quiet...

All safe thankfully.

I knew the vet practice in question do work for a small local cat rescue who run up large bills and pay when they can so ...

Good people and no bad smell when I walked in, leaving wee dog in the car.. she was fairly quiet all the way in heavy rain but managed to get her snout down my ear a few times..

Man at reception said they would fit me in so in I brought her... wee dog is totally unsocialised as I live alone and am rarely from home and then only to shop or trade so the dogs stay home.

Waited a while then the vet came out an in we went and I explained all that; he was so careful w ith here and of course while I was there watching the sharp end watching the sharp end, that was fine. Young man, kind and he listened.
She will not bite but yes she will bark and growl.

Said they would give her an enema under sedation and that I was to go back around 4 pm for her, I asked him to give the sedation before I left as it would be easier for her and held her the while so that was fine too

Before I had got to the car park the outraged howling started but other clients there assured me they would be great with her. And she had the meds in her.

Went back around 4 and when he went to get her I heard the outraged barking and he sent in for me, saying she was simply terrified. Good man to see that. She calmed as soon as she saw me.

Enema and a blockage caused by bones. Both dogs have been raw fed years with no problems. WHen I called family experts later thay said lamb bones do not break down like chicken bones. I had forgotten that last week the butcher had been boning lamb and given a great bag of juicy bones including sheets of ribs.. first and only time I have ever had or given lamb bones, and the last

Whereas collie wolfs vegetables etc wee dog eats little and refuses vegetables so it affected her but not collie

He had given long lasting painkiller and antibiotics ..

he made a nominal charge bless him.

So a vet I can trust at last.

Wee dog went straight into her crate when we got home and this morning she is drinking fine but not yet eating and he bassett face is on fulltime, bless her.

And reorganising her diet will now come...

A quiet house today.

That's good to know you've found a compassionate vet there. Shame you needed to though Poor little dog - she did sound terrified.

She is playing drama queen now of course, which means she is feeling better! Consenting to nibble a little food if I hand feed her....

I have to train her to accept my landlord as if I am eg in hospital as I was last November, he has the care of her. he is great with dogs. Collie loves him.

Wee dog is probably feeling better than I am; I ache in every muscle from lifting her into the car etc.

Still, did all my weekly shopping yesterday so will be home all week now.. watching the ewe!

It is actually all probably a blessing as after that last episode with the shyster I have had a what if niggle.

That vet was overheard telling someon that he only became a vet because his father expected it, that he hated cats and dogs and thought owners were fools as he could suggest anything and charge whatever he liked and they would pay

The reception staff at the vet yesterday were lovely and so understanding of her terror.. they loved her too

I asked them re getting the feral neutered and that is fine too.

I'm very relieved she is OK. What a worry. Also bit concerned about this blockage caused by bones?

You say 'enema and blockage caused by bones'. Do you mean that the enema 'cleared' the blockage and she passed the bones when the enema worked?

And could he tell from what 'came out' what sort of meat bones they were?

Sorry for all the questions - just that Bella is part fed on raw chicken wing pieces and sometimes I do wonder whether to continue or not or if any problems could be caused.

Editing to say I've just been doing a bit of reading up on raw bones for dogs and it seems raw chicken wings are accepted by all to be perfectly safe.

Must say I couldn't see any specific warnings about lamb - just that pork and rib bones are more likely to splinter than other types of bones.

Chicken wings should be ok Pat as they are softer than lamb or beef same as pork is fine Dillon has a raw chicken wing twice a day or pork rib or mix of both so did Ollie no problems. The acid in their stomach will break down bones. Also you feed other things same as I do. Lamb ribs and beef bones are ok if they have fibre along side it like June's dogs ie: veg and cottage cheese and minces etc.,
I believe Rose said collie will not eat veg like her other dogs who have had no problems.
