i think it depends on the type of dog, ours would be happy to stay out all night if i allowed it.
i think if you have a secure kennel/run for the dogs at night then yes they get used to it but i wouldn't do it to a pup.
you have to consider the weather, the dogs coat, the area and how secure it would be to provent ppl from pinching your dog.
also if your talking akitas some idiot might consider pinching your little 1 for dog fighting etc.
as for age to train them into an out door dog i haven't got a clue as mine are kept in doors.

With regards to age, my Boss's border terriers were all born out doors (in kennels of course), and have lived there all their life.
The female produced a wonderful litter 10 weeks ago - who were born, weaned and raised outside. (Yes, the litter was planned)

thats just it litter are born in kennels and never become indoor dogs.
i think to be honest if the kennel etc is secure then its a way of life for alot of dogs.
providing the dogs get the shelter etc they need from the elements then alot of working dogs live in barns etc.

I personally have never kept a dog outside, but it does depend on the breed & whether you can be 100% certain your dog will be 1. Safe from being stolen, 2.Not a nuisance by barking/crying whilst oustide, 3. A breed that is happy to like outside

Companion breeds like Cavaliers are "people"dogs & TBH don't do well living outdoors at all, other breeds like labradors/GSDs etc can be quite happy living outdoors part/all of the time

You would really have to start as you mean to go on & that would mean from day one. It can also put back the time your puppy is fully house trained

I don't think puppies should be kept outside ever and I also would be worried about the dog being stolen or becoming ill etc. I think through the day is ok if the kennel and run is big enough and it is safe, but I would really worry about dog theft now. Our new pup will sleep in the bedroom.

I think like some others have said it depends on a lot of factors. For instance will the pup be used to living outside, as if it isn't I can imagine it might be a bit of a shock!

But I think at this time of year and with a dog such as an Akita, you shouldn't have a problem really. But I do think you'd have to start from day one.

I really don't have a problem with keeping dogs outside, as long as they're well cared for and have proper stimulation etc.

On the house training side, they are usually clean in the house because they always do it outside anyway, so it would never occur to them to do it when they were in the house. None of my dogs have ever done it in the house except if they were ill and even then they have been really upset by it and I have had to comfort them and reassure them that it is OK.
If your dog has a fairly heavy coat it is actually more beneficial for them to be outside as central heating sometimes makes them shed all the year round.

I did however used to have dobies, and they lived outside too and never seemed to be bothered at all. They were able to come in and out of the house in the day whenever they wanted, but used to come and say hello and go back out again.
My old dog Tawney who was a ute only every really came in once in a blue moon and was not really happy inside and always took herself back out in the morning if I had brought her in because I thought the weather was really bad.
I have a small house and think that keeping 2 or 3 dogs milling around inside where they don't have room to playfight and be dogs is not fair, particularly if I have to go out for a while, I know people crate them and everything but surely it is better for them to be outside where they can play and have access to shelter when they want it than to be shut in a crate or a room????
I know lots of people do not agree with this at all by the way!!!!!
I think as long as you have a purpose built area outside thats warm & dry & the dog gets plenty of human socialisation then theres no problem at all, my male was brought up outside from the day he was born (with his litter mates & mum) & took time adapting to living inside & still likes being outdoors a lot, but like Tawnywolf my dogs are also of arctic heratige. Yes you would have to start with putting them out straigt away I would think as other wise they would become to accustomed to being indoors & it would be harder to break the patturn & would likely go through the pining process all over again. I personally would be more concearned about leaving one dog out on its own than having dogs living outside, I would feel mean & worry about it becoming lonely but thats just my personal opinion..

Welcome to the forum, here is a view from the other side, I see no reason why you should not sleep your puppy outside, providing it has a draft proof and dry shelter that will be fine. Do you intend to have the dog with you during the day?

The way others feel about their relationship with their dogs should not affect the way you wish your dog to fit in with your life. Dogs do need company and when young frequent training but if that is provided then the dog should be a happy and healthy animal being slept outside, in fact well coated dogs may well be better off than those kept 24 hours in a heated home.
