How to Groom (cut/trim) a GR for the first time?

Hi there,

Harley is our first dog and has never been groomed before (by this I mean cut/trimmed etc) and he looks like he could really do with a good groom especially around the head and chest area.

We have no idea where to start or what to do and we do not have a local dog groomer so that option is out. Can anyone give us some hints and tips?

Is there a good book out there to tell/show you how to groom a Golden Retriever? What tools do you need etc.

Harley is used to being brushed as well as having a bath (with dog shampoo) but we have never cut/trimmed him before so any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you for your time and any help/hints/tips you might be able to give.

Rose

a pair of thinning scissors for his chest would be a good idea - less room for error. Then I would just trim vertically down his feathering on his legs, and trim round his toes. It's a good idea to have short round ended scissors for his paws.

if you do find a groomer - emphasise the point that you do not want clippers on your dog! Some of the groomers round here shave everything that comes through their doors!!!

I would rather not be specific of my location at the moment but I am not on mainland Scotland so we have limited access to things.

Thank you very much for your offer though, if I was anywhere near I would take you/her up on the offer.

I'd rather not be specific on my location at the moment, sorry but I will say I am not on the mainland and access to things are limited.

Am hoping to pick up some tips so my husband can groom the dog as a)no local groomer and b)I need 24 hour care and husband is my full time carer so would be hard to travel to a groomer even if we had a local one (which we don't).

Thank you for your reply.

Thanks, the chest is one of the area's that really need some work as he is looking very scruffy.

Will look into getting some of those sissers you mention, many thanks.
