Price for clean and polish

Our collie has a receding gum round one of his teeth, the vet has recommended a clean and polish, they may find the tooth needs removing, or the clean and polish may solve the problem, the price this is going to be £248. This has come as a bit of a shock as we may still have to pay for an extraction on top. Does this sound right or a bit excessive.

No idea never had any dental problems with any of my dogs.

My first experience to as none of my other dogs have ever had tooth problems, next step will be to try other vets, just sounded way over the top to me, and wondered if anyone else had any experience.

We haven't got to the price of the extraction yet, hopefully it won't be necessary.
