Charlie - 1 year old male Lurcher X Staffie

Charlie, Lurcher x Staffie, DOB 02.11 – Godstone, Surrey

Homing Requirements: Charlie is an athletic dog who needs to attend training classes to achieve recall then achieve off lead running. Charlie is a little gushing in wanting to say ‘hello’ and once his energy is settled he'll be able to bring this under control. Not for live-in children due to his gushing attempts to play: Adolescent dog. Had a few marking issues but neutering will begin to kick in now, attention to focus him towards the garden. Secure garden.

His Story: Charlie was found stray He is now neutered, chipped and vax'd. Kennelled in Godstone, Surrey.

Advert: Charlie lifts the heart and brings a smile to everyone’s face. He is a very personable dog who wears his heart on his sleeve and is eager to tell you just how much he loves you. Needs to run on a trailing line to synchronise is athletic energy and catch the wind. He did mark a few times when fostered for a week but this diminished with distraction and positive promotion of making his garden his territory.

Charlie is a slender framed with auburn black velvet fur with a white blaze. He needs to improve his condition as kennels has taken the stuffing out of him. Happy to meet dogs but again over keen and needs to learn to tone it down. Everyone forgives Charlie he is such a sweet gentleman in the making.

Please note that this dog is currently in boarding kennels and is also available for foster until a 'forever' home is found.

We met Charlie again at the last photoshoot at the kennels - an old friend who has been with us since October 2012. He has dropped quite a lot of weight and could really do with a break from kennel life and a foster home.

Here is Mr Handsome himself...

Happy to see you too boy!

An update from one of our volunteers:

"Charlie showed a new walker around today.

He decided that two people to throw balls were definitely better than one.

Such a good boy and fun to play with. Oh and has anyone mentioned how handsome he is too"?

An update from one of our lovely volunteers, John, who quite often takes a kennel dog home for the weekend:

"Charlie had another great weekend with us. You know you have a special dog when the alarm goes off in the morning and you spend the next 45 minutes not wanting to get up because you're cuddling and playing with a big oaf! I absolutely adore Charlie,in the past he seems to have been thought of as over excitable but he must have matured because he is so calm and relaxed in the house, even his play is calm, you can encourage him to play mouth with you and he is so gentle.

Yesterday we took him to meet my mum's 2 Staffie boys one at a time, but we were out for so long that we only had time for him to meet one of them. No issues what so ever on meeting, they both said hello nicely, off for a walk then into the field where Chalkie was let off lead and Charlie on the extender. There was one point where Charlie tested the waters by putting his paw on Chalkie's back but a quirt growl from Chalkie and Charlie walked away. He had also met a few off lead dogs without issue, a quick hello and he moves on. You do have to be careful around strangers as he is so keen to say hello, and being a big dog some people can get nervous when he is pulling to get to them, but that;s just the way Charlie is, everyone he sees is a potential fuss-maker!

Charlie is much more relaxed around Tia now where toys are concerned. During his first weekend here he would take a ball away somewhere quiet, but he's starting to learn that Tia won't take his toys away from him and will now play with them close to her. He returns the compliment when Tia has a toy, though today she found a plastic bottle and Charlie wanted to play with as well, a quiet growl from Tia and Charlie left her to it.

For some reason I was under the impression that Charlie didn't like being left alone but we've had no issues there. He was left in my bedroom today for an hour, Luke stayed at home downstairs to listen out but not a peep from Charlie. He has no fear of being left in the bedroom as he will take himself upstairs now and then on his own or when the kids are up there and have a nap on my bed.

The only issue with Charlie at the moment is that he can snap when being hand fed. He hasn't made contact with fingers, he's just eager to get what's being offered so today we started to work on it and he's improving.

He is still very focussed on the cats and can't be in the same room as them but again he has shown signs of improvement this weekend when he sees them in the garden. Initially he is very focussed but now he is allowing his attention to be drawn away from them, this morning I got him to sit just a few feet from a cat and could feel him relax down as I stroked him, then he stood up and walked with me back into the house without lunging forward at the cat. I don't think he'll ever be cat friendly but there's no harm in trying to get him more relaxed near them.

And he even got to meet an Eskimo ...
