Ideas on breed of dog

Hi, I'm looking to see if anyone has any ideas as to what type of dog I saw recently. It was on Vancouver island in canada, a very large, completely black dog. He was short haired with a smooth coat, not unlike a great dane but more heavy set and not quite as tall. The head was heavy and very large paws. The closest thing i have found to it was a Cane Corso but these seem to small for what this dog was. Could just have been a mix breed. Anybody have any ideas? Cheers

If it wasn't for the fact it was short haired I would have said Newfoundland.

It could have been a mix.

A lot of people these days - at least here in Australia - breed Mastiff/Great Dane crosses.
