Underwater pictures from the Great Barrier Reef

Training has been cancelled and I have been reminded by a couple of people that I am Still sorting out pictures from Australia.....so here are some from where we were Snorkling on the GBR. It was hard as I have never snorkled before - but we had some really great people helping.

We went to 3 sites on the outer reef (Agincourt reef) and also 3 or 4 when we were travelling round the Whitsundays (fringing reef. THe water temperature was about 26 degrees (C).

Hope you enjoy.
Calm Sea

Clear water

The reef (well - a very small part of it anyway!)

Coral

Apparently Coral grows at about 10mm per year.....So peices like this...

and this...

Which were about 8-10 foot long...well - you can imagine!

I was fascinated with these bits...they looked almost fleece like to touch (although of course you couldn;t)

And then of course there were the fish.....if you think its hard to get a dog to stand right for a picture...you should try a fish!

Amazing colours....but never where you wanted them to be!

And just some more random ones...

THis guy was a marine biologist - he led us on a guided snorkle....which was really fascinating.

....I always thought Sea cucumbers were small things...

....anyway - thanks for looking

Wow, that looks great.

I did some snorkelling/scuba diving in the Red Sea a couple of years back - the colours are just amazing and the water so clear - your photos really took me back

Fantastic photos...I love to see anything to do with underwater...sadly I will never experience anything like that myself as I'm scared of water and have seen far too many horror films

I can imagine it was very peaceful down there

Thats a shame.

Apparently some people found it very difficult and experienced Vertigo when we snorkled off the boat - I couldn't undertand it till I went - but it is a very long way down and it takes a while to trust the Snorkle!

We did see one Reef Shark....they guys all said to us the proceedure when you see a shark (if you are scared)...
