Laptop monitor gone black....help please.

Does anyone have any idea what can have gone wrong?
If i plug the laptop into our main monitor the laptop itself is ok so it is definitely the display. Can anyone help?

It is your backlight that has gone. I think it is about £70 to have it repaired

Could you have accidentally changed the display settings in the control panel?

My laptop can either display on its own screen - or on a 'remote' one. But you have to change the settings for each.

Worth checking Control panel - display - settings if you are using XP.

I have had a quote of £130 to fix the laptop. I'm not sure it is worth it at that......

You'lll probably find that's about right for a laptop repair.

The trouble with them is that the components are all packed together - so not easy to work on.

FWIW my machine was / is one of the cheaper ones and I got an estimate of £75 plus carriage for its repair.

The question I had to answer was, given I wanted a laptop - could I get one cheaper? I had mine repaired

The guy in the shop said Advent who make mine are awful at repairs and take forever. I would be looking at between 4-6 weeks. He is a small independent pc guy who does loads of repairs.

If this guy is willing to repair your machine - why not let him do it.

I didn't send my Acer back to them - but to a firm that I found listed at the bottom of an ebay page. The repair they carried out on my machine is still holding.

Chip and Dale are older - and haven't gone for the cable again

How old is the laptop? Also where did you get it from? The backlight is covered in a normal 12 month warranty and also in any extended warranty, eg PC World/Currys "Coverplan"
