Why is my dog drinking lots of water?

My old boy Frosty is suddenly drinking a lot of water and so needing to wee more often- hes been getting us up a couple of times a night this week. Im worried. Hes 12 and a collie type mongrel is loosing his marbles a little but is mostly happy in his world. He is the sweetest softest boy you can imagine so you can appreciate my shock when he snarled and went for both me and my husband recently. Any advice out there?

See at vet! It can be a number of things, diabetes springs to mind.
Hope your vet can find out what it is, better treated than ignored!

Yes I would make a visit to the vet, it could be a kidney problem.

Agree, see the vet asap. your dog is in pain and the sooner treatment is offered the better.

Hi

My Collie X who was 13yrs old at the time, was doing the same & it turned out it was diabetes, however he was not aggressive, so i would say your dog is in some pain somewhere.

Lets us know what the vet says.

Many thanks

Amanda

So pleased to read that you have taken him to the vets tonight. Diabetes would be the first thing to spring to mind closely followed by kidney disease, although I would probably be looking more towards diabetes due to the suddeness.

The important thing to remember is that although he may be urinating overnight, do not take his water away. He will actually be drinking more because he is urinating more, not the other way around which is what most people think, and understandably so as this would seem the logical explanation, and so by taking water away he would only become dehydrated.

Hope it's nothing too serious for him though. Let us know how he gets on xx

We saw the vet last night he had blood tests done and urine this morning. The results have come back and apparently theres nothing wrong with him! Im stuck now, we cant limit his water we have three dogs and i would feel it cruel. Any ideas as to what we do now?
Its getting worse he was up three times last night and still weed on floor. Poor old frosty. Hes eating fine and has just enjoyed a four mile walk.

Cushings disease could be another consideration? maybe mention this to your vet and have some tests done for this?

Although its nice that his bloods were ok, it's a shame that they didn't show something - at least then you would have an idea of the problem
